2009 was kind of a shit-show, but it seemed like a damn good year to start what i hope will become a lifelong process. of looking back and learning and yearning and cleansing and being honest. coming to terms with what 365 days can do to a person, and realizing that every moment is a lesson learned. and i'll do it with words, because words are what i do. 1. moonroofs are not for walking. don’t ever put your feet on your moonroof. 2. it is absurd and irrational to think that pretending is better. tell the truth and pick up the pieces as they fall. 3. or just let them fall. 4. my car, paul, actually takes care of me. he helps me not to die. get yourself a honda element. 5. trailers are the best livin'. you feel the sun rise, feel the wind blow. you feel it all and it’s lovely. 6. there are, indeed, vampires in utah. travel safely. 7. when in doubt, take it out. when in doubt, if it’s skin, leave it in. 8. if you call off a wedding, be prepared for a great number of people to be super pissed off at you. even if it was for the best, they will NOT get that. 9. there is nothing that the road cannot heal. 10. columbia crest 2 vines is the best, cheapest wine ever. 11. you can keep your life from falling apart, even when your world is, if you try hard enough to focus. 12. sunrises beat sunsets approximately 117,700:1. 13. it is what it is (no...it actually is.) 14. the mistress never wins; even when she thinks she does; because her only prize is a lying, cheating bastard. 15. it is good to live in a place you hate for a time. you not only learn tolerance but you learn to truly love where you come from. 16. how to spay a dog : skin incision, abdominal incision, strum, tie, tie, tie, cut. repeat. follow uterus down to body, tie, tie, cut. close carefully, close, close prettily. done. not exactly as easy as it sounds. 17. my fake boyfriend is the perfect boy. no requirements or arguments and hot as all hell. love you mgg. 18. i am crafty in the actual, conventional, sewing and creating kinda way! 19. i am also crafty in the sneaky, clever sense of the word. 20. the most delicious string cheese in the world is sargento low fat. it’s true with almost nothing else in the world, but with string cheese, nothing shreds better. 21. there is no better friend than a seriously intelligent 12 year old girl. best advice ever. 22. i have been incredibly blessed to have not lost more people in my life. for this, i am thankful. and also so sad to have lost the ones i have: jack smyth, travis schmidt, jerermy glau, brian gianelli, luke agosta, and all of the amazing women and men who i have had the immense pleasure of getting to know at my mom’s care home. 23. anything beer with “ice” in the title typically carries at least a 1% higher alcohol content than its non-ice counterpart. 24. though the butterflies in your stomach may fade a little over time, it is critical that they be there at the beginning. 25. home is where the cat lives. 26. red flags are red and waving in the breeze for a reason. because you are in fact supposed to pay attention to them. 27. your whole world can change in a year. and when things flip upside-down, only the greatest friends and family in the world will get you through. 28. a couple of wives can be infinitely better than one husband. 29. changing someone’s name in your phone to “NO! Asshole!” will not keep you from answering when he calls. or texting with him at this very moment. 30. the best rest stop in the world is on the idaho/oregon border just outside ontario. it has a doggy drinking fountain...and it smells incredible! 31. sometimes, you’ve just gotta move out. preferably into meg’s house. oh, and get a dog or two. 32. to remove the pluck from a horse, the best approach is always to remove both mandibles, hard as that may be, and then the tongue, larynx, esophagus, etc. 33. sometimes it takes a long time for forgiveness. possibly forever. 34. if you ever see dr. leathers cervically dislocate a chicken, the image will never leave you. 35. my stepfather is the person i was most at-odds with during my teenage years. he has become a stronger man than i could ever have imagined...and is my hero. 36. sloths are ecosystems unto themselves. don’t ask them to play jenga though. 37. social networking sites are tricky. some rules: don’t send poems which have the potential to be intercepted and blow your cover. try not to make your status updates avenues for revenge. you can make incredible friends of people you only knew briefly. if you block, you cannot stalk. 38. ely, nevada is the town i have felt the most home-away-from-home in....perhaps it’s the bars that stay open all night? or the taxidermy? probably it’s the fact that the hotel personnel decided to write poems about the water temperature! 39. heartbreak comes better earlier than later. 40. i love living alone. never in my entire life have i felt more capable or happy. 41. prescott is officially my home. no matter how i feel when i come back there...it’s always my mama’s arms i’m walking in to. 42. goats are kinda gooey on necropsy. that’s not edema. they’re just gooey. 43. i want to leap, catch on fire, build villages of rhyming. i want to throw my effort into boldness or throw my arm out trying. 44. i have never regretted adopting a pet – it happens when it’s supposed to. i have, however, regretted not adopting a pet who was meant to be. 45. trust the process. 46. there are some secrets to healing a broken heart: ani difranco (especially if boy related), talib kweli reflection eternal, road trips with the people you love, 21 curves, wine (in moderation), classmates if you’ve got them, poems (just write!) paintings, kissing, sunsets, dogs, cats, snuggles. 47. sometimes you’ve gotta choke bitches. 48. words are stronger than swords, or shotguns. they are hotter than fire and wetter than water. be careful with them. and bust them out when you need them. 49. if the dog is dead, it’s not gonna heal. 50. listen closely to the people who love you...especially if they say they do not recognize who you’ve become. 51. my first dog, dante, is my best friend. he would never let anything happen to me. i feel safe at all times with this guy next to me. 52. mammals are mammals. 53. friends crop up in the most unlikely of places. these are friends you should keep. 54. if you can picture the person you love happier with someone else, and it does not bother you, it's time to go (even if they haven't pictured it yet). 55. there are passions that will make you stupid, no matter how hard you try to be rational. these passions are usually too big, and too much for you or anyone in their right mind to deal with. i will tell you now that you should run away...but you won’t. no one would. |
