sarahalyse's Collaborations

ManWithHat and I have talked a lot about opening a diner. Our grandfather owned a deli in downtown Seattle before we were born, and made damn near everything from scratch. We've always wanted to follow in his footsteps, but to suit our lifestyle: an all-night diner instead of a deli. One night, at a real 24-hour diner in Seattle (The Hurricane Cafe), we started talking about our theoretical diner. We decided it should be full of pop culture references, just like our lives. We started writing down menu ideas, and before long we had essentially a full menu. We'll probably never actually open a diner, but we'd like to imagine what would happen if we did. What I want to try here is a collaborative universe. Check out the menu, and see if it inspired some ideas. We'd love to see stories about people in the diner: regulars, employees, etc. We'd love to see visual depictions of the diner and its occupants. We'd like suggestions for new menu items. This could potentially end up as a short story collection, or just as a source of inspiration for some cool art. We look forward to what you kids will come up with! |

Joe's recommendation that we look to the public domain for inspiration made my mind go one place: folk. Both folk music and folk tales are a wonderful source of inspiration, and much of it is in the public domain! Watch the video for some more ideas, but here's a general list: - Write your own wording of a folk tale - Take a folk tale and modernize it or give it a new setting - Mash up two well-known folk tales (Sondheim, anyone?) - Record your favorite folk song - ReRECord a folk song and make it in a new genre - Turn a folk tale into a song - Make a folk song into a tale - Illustrate a folk tale or song - Post the lyrics of a folk song you want someone else to reRECord Be smart and do a little research to make sure your folk tale/song is actually traditional and not written by Joan Baez or Neil Gaiman or some such nonsense. Let's take the art of our folks and reRECord. EDIT: I want to clarify that I am not suggesting we only use strictly "traditional" works. After all, everything was written by somebody. A perfect example is "This Land Is Your Land": Just because we know Woody Guthrie wrote it doesn't make it any less a folk song. It's public domain because he wanted it to be. This site is a useful tool for finding public domain works: http://www.pdinfo.com/ |

The jumping pictures thread thrived on v2 but never really took off on v3. I aim to change that now! Jump off a bench, your bed, a diving board, and snap yourself mid-leap. Take someone's midair flail and photoshop them above a shark's gaping maw, or amidst a swarm of faeries. Just JUMP! |

A NOTE FOR ALL: I started the Permanent Records thread on v2, and it had many posts with photos of some great tattoos by our members. When v3 came around I started a collaboration, but very few people reposted their tattoos on the new site. Of the few posted, most were lost in the conversion to v4. Then, someone started a new tattoos collaboration without looking to see if one already existed, which has proven more popular. C'est la vie. If you want to post tattoos, I recommend you do so here: http://www.hitrecord.org/records/44197 The original description from v3: "I'm reviving the Permanent Records collaboration from V2. Please post photos and stories about the images, thoughts, words, or ideas that you decided to record permanently in your flesh. With the new focus on remixing and results, I'm not sure what we can really do with this collaboration. But I'm sure you guys will come up with something!" |

Started on the v2 forum, I present the Take a Walk collaboration! Inspired by Lisa's "Moving Snapshots" thread and nusha's suggestion, I decided to make a collaboration for videos of feet walking. Get your video camera out, put on your favorite kicks, and walk/stroll/meander/gambol/frolic/stomp the record! Update: Jolynne is recording her "Take a Walk" song for an upcoming album! Let's get some fresh walking vids and magic up a video for her! |
