The man looks at his son, who is currently fixated on the sidewalk. "We have to go," he says, "or you'll be late for school!"

The son glances up at his father, then back at the sidewalk. "No, not yet."

"And why not?" The man is impatient, the tapping of his toes becoming apparent to the boy.

"Look here." Although not keen on humouring his child, he's willing to try anything to get moving. He leans in close to the spot that the boy is pointing.

"It's an ant," the boy says. "Look at him dad."

"What about him?"

"I think he needs help. He can't lift that cookie on his own."

A frown paints its way across the man's face. "Then why don't you help him?"

"I don't want to scare him," the boy admits sheepishly, "but I don't want to leave him. I want to make sure he's okay."

The man puts his arm around his boy and stares at the ant too. There is no future and no past, only the present. All that exists in this moment are him, his son, and the ant.

Of fantasy and dreams

O Sing to me Muse
Of when it first began,
With the placement correct
We now found ourselves with light
And flocked to it like moths

We drew from it thoughts
