In third year of university I have to complete a final project. As I want to write music for film in the future, I decided that a short film would be the best option.
I have had a few small ideas. One of them is a film about '101 Things To Do Before You Die'. It would be full of good ideas, bad ideas and completely silly ones.
This was my I-DEER. Get it? I-de...okay. i'll shut up.
- Choir
Around the time I wrote this, I was listening to Hans Zimmer's 'The Da Vinci Code' soundtrack. In particular 'Kyrie for the Magdalene' and wanted to create something similar. I love choirs and sort of 'Bach chorale' style harmonies so I played around and gave a composition a little go.
I thought I'd put it on here since I haven't uploaded anything in a while and someone may want to use it as a soundtrack for a religious or church environment. It's very simple so it wouldn't take away any attention from a film, just a sort of...atmosphere.

- Scary Soundscape
This piece consists of heavily edited everyday sounds like a washing machine, a falling plate, cars outside, opening a packet of clicking a pen. All of them recorded by me from my bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and brighton beach.
Turned out to be pretty scary, no?
Thought I would just put it out there for anyone to edit/use if they wanted any creepy, atmospheric sound for their animations/films. Go for it!
- We Begin To Hear
“Four and a half months after we are conceived, we begin to hear. It is the first of our senses to be connected up and functioning. And for the next four and a half months we luxuriate in a continuous bath of sounds: the song of our mother’s voice, the swash of her breathing, the piping of her intestines, the timpani of her heart.”
I was aiming for an ambient, relaxing song so I focused on the timbral characteristics of the sounds as ambient music does. I concentrated on editing and changing the tone colour of each instrument. I mainly used Logic’s preset sounds but added effects and plug-ins to produce a unique and appropriate effect.
I used the EXS24 sampler on Logic, various plug-ins to alter space, filters, a low frequency oscillator and some Logic pre-set instruments.
My main aim for this piece was to replicate Murch’s quote through sound and music. I used sounds and effects to represent what he was describing. The ambient choral section reflecting the ‘mother’s voice’, the heartbeat sounds, reflective instruments and sound effects replicating the breathing and ‘piping intestines’.
It would be cool if someone maybe made a film, animation even photograph to go with this music. Do whatever.
- Long Distance Relationship
The percussion obviously gives the impression of a clock with a melancholy bass line below. The harp and glockenspiel although lovely instruments, the chords are never truly resolved until the end when the two hands meet.
