My brother (dashJdot) and I put a lot of work and care into this record with much consideration for the original song.
"Make Space" in and of itself is an absolutely beautiful concept, and Metaphorest and LizzieMackie deserve heaps and heaps of credit for bringing this to life.
I, however, being a very curious one, wanted to see if I could bring anything to it to enhance it without taking away or overpowering it. So I added some strings, I asked my brother to play banjo, etc. As I kept listening and working on it, I became more inspired by this simple yet brilliant piece, and a mythology of the song started to sprout in my imagination.
An image flashed in my head and I drew the coffin that is featured on the icon of this record. The words I wrote to accompany the image seemed like morsels left on the ground in the woods, so I followed the trail. I began writing a short passage in the haunting voice of someone whose love seems to transcend all matters of life and death.
With this passage, I set out to create a traditional AABA song form, at once lengthening the song, and also giving it a somber turn, only to have it lift at the end with the hopeful feeling the song has had from the beginning.
Over the past three months, my brother and I determined to invest countless hours of arranging, recording, mixing, mastering, and perfecting this version. We've listened to this record hundreds of times, and it's as new and lovely to my ears as the first time I heard it. Whether fully arranged or stripped down to a guitar and an angelic voice, I feel that "Make Space" is truly a timeless work.
Thanks for listening!
