EXT. SMALL FISHING PORT VILLAGE -- EARLY MORNING.
Fog slowly rolls out as the early morning sun peeks through spreading its rays onto a clutter of bobbing fishing boats.
The tranquil bay sounds of gulls and boat bells as it wakes with the sleepy village.
[HOOONNKKKKK]
A ship’s fog horn sounds.
CUT TO:

Fishermen holler and mingle as they unload their morning catches in front of an audience of hungry seagulls and wharf cats.
Crabs are poured into portable holding tanks.
Buyers bargain with boat captains for the mornings catch.
A scruffy FISHERMAN, dressed in yellow waders and a dirty long john shirt, emerges from his small boat carrying a bucket which tips a bit.
Water and a single crab falls to the ground. It is quickly scooped back up landing in the bucket amongst the others.
The FISHERMAN carries the crate of live crabs toward the nearby market.

An older woman, PAULO’S MOTHER, enters the home with a skinny cigarette hanging from her lip and carrying a bag of fresh herbs and groceries which she begins to unload on the counter.
Paulo’s elderly GRANDFATHER sits at the table with a steaming cup of coffee and an apple which he pares with a small knife before sliding it into his mouth from the blade.
PAULO’S MOTHER pauses. Something is missing from her bag. She checks again through the ingredients.
PAULO’S MOTHER
PAULO!
No answer.
PAULO’S MOTHER
PAULO!!!
CUT TO:
INT. PAULO’S HOME -- LIVING ROOM
An empty living room sits lifeless.
CUT TO:
INT. PAULO’S HOME -- BATHROOM
Nothing but a dripping faucet.
CUT TO:
INT. PAULO’S HOME -- BEDROOM
The room at first seems empty - nothing but an empty bed.
PAULO, a young boy with gleaming eyes lies on his stomach with an open book.
PAULO’S MOTHER (O.S.)
Paulo. Quit messing around and come in here.
PAULO shuts the book which reads: The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, and leaves the room.
CUT TO:
INT. PAULO’S HOME -- KITCHEN
PAULO enters the room as his mother digs through her purse a minute. She reveals 2 dollar bills which she holds out.
PAULO’S MOTHER
Here is two dollars. I need you to go to the wharf and get me a loaf of fresh bread...
PAULO looks to his GRANDFATHER who gives him a wink.
PAULO’s face lights up.
PAULO’S MOTHER
Just one loaf of bread and come right back, okay?
PAULO nods. He takes the money and quickly heads for the door.
PAULO’S MOTHER
Come right back...Pau..lo
PAULO has already dashed out the door.
CUT TO:
EXT. PAULO’S STREET
PAULO runs over to a small hill overlooking the entire town and harbor.
[HOONNKK]
PAULO turns and runs down a narrow street headed toward town.
EXT. MARKET
PAULO, walking, comes around the corner into the vibrant market his eyes wandering amongst the hustle of the busy streets.
An old FLOWER SALESWOMAN sprays and sweeps off water from the front stoop of her booth in the warm sun before stopping to scold her young daughter for placing her display wrong.
He rounds the corner.
INT. BUTCHER SHOP
A man trims at the fat of a cut of meat.
PAULO sits with his face pressed up on the glass outside looking in when the butcher looks up and waves.
Paulo walks on.
EXT. FISHERMAN’S WHARF
PAULO walks past the lines of booths selling fresh crabs and fish. Fishermen yell out their deals and try and lure in customers.
PAULO arrives at a booth which mounds with fresh loaves of sourdough bread, pulls out his 2 dollars, and gets in line.
A small statured OLD MAN digs in a trash can near by. The man pulls out a large round of bread and deposits it into bag filled to the brim with excess loaves.
The OLD MAN tosses a bit of bread on the ground beside him. Seagulls squawk and gather around.
PAULO turns his attention to the fish stand beside him where a large pot of water boils and beside it a big vat of live crabs squirms.
The FISHERMAN comes up to the counter and begins to unload more crabs into the vat with a few missing now and again and flopping onto the counter to be shortly scooped back by his hand.
One of them slides out of the FISHERMAN’s reach.
The water left boiling A few feet away steams and rises between PAULO and the crab.
Paulo moves from the line to get a closer look.
A large man, carrying a bowl of crab bisque in one hand, arrives and pushes his way past PAULO. He talks with a big bite in his mouth.
MAN 1
How much?
The man slurps and chews as he begins to tap on the small crab on the table.
MAN 1
Pretty good size you are all getting... Supply and demand right?! HAHA.
The man boisterously laughs and knocks on the head of the defenseless crab again. The small crab tries to move but has nowhere to run.
MAN 1
Give me 2 pounds... And toss in that little bugger there. He looks feisty.
The FISHERMAN reaches into the vat grabbing a few crabs and throwing them on a small scale. A sudden swoop tosses them in the boiling water.
The crabs make a tiny high pitch screech.
MAN 1
(To Paulo)
Hear that boy? Hear em screech? Thats the sound of a good dinner calling my name. Hahaha...
PAULO watches with horror.
FISHERMAN 1
Alright. That’s 2 pounds. It will be...
MAN 1
You forgot my little bugger up front here son. That’s the highlight of the dish.
The FISHERMAN stops at the register and looks over the counter.
PAULO watches in horror.
The squirming vat of crabs.
The boiling hiss.
The laughing man.
FISHERMAN 1
(un-amused)
Sorry about that.
The FISHERMAN reaches over the counter... Its gone.
MAN 1
Hey! Wha?.. That kid took my crab?!
FISHERMAN 1
Hey!!!
PAULO, with crab in hand, dashes down the road.
FISHERMAN 1
Stop that kid!
The fisherman hops over the counter and begins to chase after.
The crowd stops in the commotion.
FISHERMAN 1
That kid stole my crab!
A man in line at the bread store turns and follows in the chase.
Meanwhile, The fat old man takes a bite of his soup, shrugs and walks away.
PAULO dashes past the man feeding the seagulls causing them to flurry upwards.
The fisherman waves his arms as he passes through the thick birds.
INT. BUTCHER SHOP
PAULO runs past the butcher’s shop followed by now three pursuers. The butcher drops his knife.
TOWNSPERSON 1
Thief! Stop him!
The BUTCHER waddles out the front door after PAULO.

EXT. MARKET
PAULO runs through the flower shop past the young girl then under her mother who carries a huge basket of flowers.
She hobbles, then the fisherman and others plow into her tossing flowers and pedals everywhere.
The daughter smiles as her mother stands up and also joins in the chase.
EXT. NARROW STEET
PAULO weaves down the narrow street past pedestrians and around the corner.
He snags his pants on a bench which tears open his pocket.
PAULO’s money falls to the ground. The FISHERMAN and crowd step over it as one coin still spins in the road.
EXT. RESTAURANT
PAULO runs through a setting of tables and people eating breakfast.
The growing pursuit, in passing, catches the table cloth pulling everything on a couple’s table crashing to the floor.
EXT. ALLEY
PAULO’s feet splash in glimmering puddle. The others follow shortly behind.
EXT. INTERSECTION
The mob runs past what looks like a small pine tree. After they pass the branches open to reveal a comidically dressed homeless man, and beside him, PAULO who runs the other way.
The crowd notices and turns back.
EXT. DOCKS
PAULO runs around a corner and onto the fishing dock.
PAULO, one after another dodges fishermen working.
Carrying crates.
Tethering ropes.
The others get tangled up one after another.
The Fisherman grows closer as PAULO nears the end of the dock. They are step for step.
PAULO reaches the end.
Slides to a stop.
Raises his arms.
The crab flies from his hands and into the air.
Others in pursuit pile up behind the fisherman and watch on as the crab flies.
Then falls.
[plop]
The crab disappears into the bay with a small splash.
Everyone looks on - then to PAULO.
Faces are speechless.
One woman, a few feet behind begins to clap. Others slowly follow in.
PAULO stands looking into the water before slowly and cautiously turning back toward the FISHERMAN who just looks down speechless.
FADE TO:
EXT. FISHERMAN’S WHARF
PAULO stands in front of the bakery and digs into his pocket. His hand comes out the other end.
PAULO is shocked. He stares at the bread filled window hopelessly.
He hangs his head and turns to find a set of bright yellow feet that lead up to the FISHERMAN standing behind.
PAULO and the FISHERMAN stand face to face.
The FISHERMAN reaches out and hands PAULO 2 silver dollars.
END.
