Tonight will be different, he said to himself, Tonight will be different for sure.
And he picked out a tie, the one with the clouds, the one that looked dashing before.
Then picked up his top hat and picked up his cane, and soon he was on his way.
But prepared as he was for this night of nights, he just was not meant to stay.
He came to the room, which was already full, and slowly squeezed in to one side.
He tried to act normal, to converse and to talk, but soon found he would rather hide.
Then a lamp shattered, and I‘m sorry, he said, this has not happened before.
And I’m sorry, he said, as he stepped on one’s foot, I’m sorry, again and once more.
And the crowd fell silent, and someone looked up, and he thought: No… It’s too soon,
But then someone uttered those dreaded words, the ones with the elephant in the room.
And every head turned and every eye stared, and he just wanted to disappear.
But big and grey, and clumsy he was, it was really hard to stay clear,
Of the things in his way as he squeezed through the crowd, trying to get to the door.
And he wished, once again, more than ever before,
That he could just be…
