I've been wanting to put a video together on this topic for a while, so I finally did it today. I'm really pleased overall with the level of discourse that's currently happening, but I thought this might help break things down a bit and making giving constructive feedback not so scary. I know that it can be, so hopefully there's some helpful points in here!

This is my first draft for a complete Sundance 2012 RECord. This draft contains the introduction, the sing-a-long, and the tiny stories. Let me know what you guys think!

Calling all Animators, all Illustrators, we are working with The Gregory Brothers on a second episode of the HITRECORD classic, They Can't Turn The Lights Off Now! And it's on the books to be screened at Sundance next week!

Episode One rallied behind Gay Civil rights, Episode 2 discusses the civil liberty to record Police and Law Enforcement officers throughout the country. Certain states in the USA have actually taken steps to outlaw anyone from photographing and video taping their local law enforcement, a direct slap in face to the First Amendment. 

That's why The Gregory Brothers remixed the "Lights Off" music and wrote a new story with new lyrics and characters that addresses this concern.  What they have made is fucking awesome!

And now it's our turn to start designing and animating the short film. 

Here's what to do:

ILLUSTRATORS -

Design the 3 main characters:

1. The Kid with the Camera


2. The Policeman


3. An Angelic Benjamin Franklin who comes to educate us all

Design Background Settings:

• Listen to the song that The Gregory Brothers have contributed and read the script to learn the settings and environments.   


• Watch Episode One and School House Rock to get a sense of the style we are looking for.  

Also, it'd be great if you can contribute your character designs along with the limbs, head, and torso seperated, so that animators can have total control and ease while animating. 

Animators - Once we get some good Character and Setting designs, start animating!  But please do it as simply as you can.  The idea is to get this done in 7 days to be screened at Sundance!

Is Sunday again and it means that it’s time for RE Recs, these are my recommendations for this week; I hope you all enjoy this video:

1. Cinema Exhibition by greytime: This is one of the best projects that I’ve seen at HR so far, this is just fantastic, and this was a project made with love and passion for HR, so thank you very much greytime for such a wonderful gift to all of us! Great job!


2. Grandma’s Cottage by unusual suspect: I love this drawing, it’s amazing because it reminds me to my grandpa’s house in a small town in Nicaragua named: Nindiri, it was surrounded by trees and he had cows, horses and chickens, that house doesn’t exist anymore, but this drawing makes me remind this place, love it!


3. He had a son by Artsea: This is super cute, I love this little Fred or in this case his son, it could be really good if somebody make a drawing of all his family! It’s Just an idea….


4. Because there is a war being waged for your minds (and a new earth typography) by naivecrimson: There is a lot of fantastic contributions for the New Earth Typography but this is one of my favorites, I love how naivecrimson played with the letters and words, the result is just fantastic!


5. Married to Infinity take 2 by Kittypimms: Another great contribution for the Typography collab and this is one of my favorite lines of and a New Earth text and I love what Kitty did with this especially the ring in the middle!


6. Sparks of Divinity by Kavonne: As I said there are a lot of fantastic contributions for this collab request made by Joe, but this is my favorite #3, Sparks of Divinity made by Kavonne, I love the letters that she chose and for me this is one of the most magical lines of the new earth text!


7. And a New Earth – partial (v1) by DianeFT: Can you believe that this video is the first Diane’s video remix? Yes it is, and she did a Wonderful job with the editing and the resources that she used and not only she received a lot of hearts but also it was a featured record, so I highly recommend this fantastic video made by Diane, great job my dear, I am so proud of you!


8. Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf by AW Clift: I really love this video, the music, the animation, the voices, it’s just perfect, I think that this is one of my favorites Little Red’s animations so far!


9. Little Red Giving Little Flower by Monika Dekowska: I love Monika’s work, she made fantastic drawings and her style is unique, I don’t know how this record doesn’t have more hearts, I really love this!


10. Nightmare (Little Red Remix) by Fractaldust: This remix made by Dusty is beautiful, I love the elements that she chose and the concept of the remix: Little red having nightmares and surrounded by scary and horrible faces! I think that it could be useful for an animation or a tiny story!


11. Red Riding Hood by F.M. Gore-Kelly: This is my favorite Little Red so far, she looks really great, and I think that she is perfect, this little red can be useful for any short film or for any animation or video!


12. What you made me do by CMSchelsea: First I have to say that I really laughed a lot when I read CMSChelsea’s introduction text for this record, second, I think that this is a fantastic drawing, little red holding in her hands the wolf’s head feeling a little sad because she killed him? PERFECT! This is begging for a tiny story, a remix, an animation or the addition of colors, maybe I’ll try something later…


13. Wolf.2012 by michellehebert: This is my favorite painting of the wolf so far, it’s really great, especially that he is howling and it looks like he is dropping beautiful colors from his mouth, just perfect, great concept!


14. Blue Dildo Envelope Animation FINAL by noellashka: This is a great animation of the Blue dildo’s envelope, I love what she did with the cats and the flowers, I think that this is a fantastic job and it can be used for any video remix or animation!

This is a short film/stop animation I made with the help of my friend.  I think it would be really cool if someone contributed some sort of voice over.  I originally intended it to be for the Love collab but I think it works for Independence as well.  It's about a lonely, shy girl who finds her strengths in her imagination and throws herself into her writing (thus the paper girl made of words) but she's still lonely, and then she meets someone else like her.  I guess it's about love as a connection of imagination, meeting someone on a more abstract level.  Anyway, whatever your interpretation, have at it! I've spent several days on this and I need a break.

Since we're still having some problems with the dashboard and recommendations page, I think that making re-recommendation albums and videos have become even more important than usual because they're a great way for us to find records we may have missed. 

I thought I'd make a tutorial explaining some of the nuts and bolts of re-RECing in general, and then talk about how I make my re-REC vids.
