Meenah10's Collaborations
|
Collabs are working for me again, so this is just a copy/paste of the text record I posted:: I think everyone is feeling some serious empathetic pains for Joe right now. While there have been some mixed reactions to the cancellation for fall formal, it's HEARTening to see all the comments and RECords of support. We all know why fall formal needed to be canceled, and I think it's a huge relief to know that Joe and his loved ones will be taking the time they need right now. But Joe kind of made a monster here, right? I mean, hitRECord is his brain child, and it came to life, and now, it's fully functioning and self aware in its own way. If we don't have Joe to fearlessly lead us for a while, we need to lead ourselves in his honor... There's been talk about Fall Formal goers who have already made travel plans to still get together. How awesome! Do it, RECord it. But there are a shit ton of us who couldn't go in the first place. I was expecting a lot of records to come out of people at home in formal attire anyway, so how about everyone jump on the train? So I'm issuing a challenge of sorts. Let's RECord ourselves going out in our formal wear. On the bus, at the park, at a fast food restaurant, sitting on your couch--Let's RECord ourselves all being fancy. The more inappropriate the setting, the better I think. The possibilities are endless. I think this community more than any other I know can see why it's important to celebrate life, especially now. It's too brief and precious not to celebrate. So in honor of Joe and especially in honor and memory of Dan, let's celebrate this community that has been so important to them both. Fall Formal wasn't just about being in a certain place at a certain time. It was about celebrating how far this community has come, how much has been created. We can still celebrate that together by heart, right? Thoughts? Ideas? Criticism? Let it flow, y'all. |

(As a preface, this is a bit long, but it's an issue that I feel very strongly about. If you skip to the bottom, you can see the gist of what I'm wanting to do!) Recently, if you live in the United States and even if you don’t, you have probably heard that a potential Islamic Community Center has seriously ruffled some feathers in NYC. The reality is this: The proposed community center, which yes, would include a mosque, would be 13-stories tall and located two blocks from ground zero. There are many arguments on each side of this issue, but ultimately, I believe this comes down to a civil liberties issue. Should Muslim Americans have the same rights as any other American to buy property and build on it? I think yes. However, in a post 9/11 America, this isn’t a simple issue for anyone. What I think is crucially important now is that we, as a nation, remember that it was Radical Muslims involved in the attack on our country. Islam is to Radical Islam much the same way that Christianity is to Christian Extremism (think the WBC). It’s unfair and wrong to judge an entire people based on a small group of cruel extremists--these people are not representative of an entire faith. Many people do not agree with me, and that’s fine. The beauty of being a US citizen is that we all have the right to express our opinions freely. That being said, I think the hitRECord is a very special, typically open-minded and open-hearted community. That’s where my idea for a collaboration comes in. I read the following quote online: “A national CBS poll from last month showed that 40 percent of Americans had an unfavorable view of Islam. More than 70 percent of respondents said building a mosque near Ground Zero was not appropriate. And only 62 percent of Americans think Muslims should have the same right as other groups to build places of worship in their communities, a Pew Research poll found.” (courtesy of - http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100901/pl_yblog_upshot/muslim-americans-launch-pr-initiaive-promote-911-as-day-of-national-service) I would like to see a collaboration come together expressing Perception vs Reality of Muslim Americans. A recent ad series is focusing on humanizing Muslims and reminding everyone that they are citizens as well. I want to be a part of a similar supportive movement. What do you think of American Muslims or Muslims in general? I want truth and honesty. Are you afraid of Islam? Do you think it’s beautiful? Does Islam in and of itself present a threat to national security? To Christianity? Has knowing a Muslim changed your perception of their faith? What do you know and what do you not know? Whatever your opinion, your thoughts are a valid and important step towards understanding and ultimately, a more compassionate society. How can you express yours? Through painting, sketches, music, poetry, short stories, videos, personal testimony—it’s what this site is all about. So make a RECord, and let’s see what kind of statement we can make as a community! |
