The bedroom was dark except for the glowing stars above her bed. Her mother’s careful hands had placed them there fifteen years ago when this daughter was just a child, and it seemed that she wouldn’t be a child for very much longer. “Go ahead, turn them on,” he said, his voice a breath against her skin. She turned away from him in bed, saying, “No, not now.” And he said, “Please?” She looked up at the false night sky on her ceiling, at the planets and comets all still and silent, just a dark and glowing mystery waiting above her. She sighed, and with her free hand plugged in the string lights that hung on the ceiling, which immediately blasted the entire room with a warm glow that erased the stars and left her alone with him in the night. Unlike the stars, he had no mystery in him, only comfort, and while comfort kept away the cold it could never make her rise from the darkness, singing. The quiet glow of the stars, however, was no match for the red lights that now illuminated her plaster sky. And as he placed a piece of himself inside of her, she thought, “Yes. This is fine. This will do.” And the stars went out. |
