A satirical sonnet about small talk and big words
OF DEFINITIONS REDEFINED
As chitchat swirls like a newborn rain cloud,
I sit beneath an umbrella mushroom
which, with its large mouth, saves me from the crowd.
I escape with my sanity...or so I assume.
For what, indeed, defines this hard-sought trait?
Can it be a vilipenditory vocabulary?
Some who, through logolepsy, define love and hate?
Again, I avoid this fatality...
For words twisted will twist minds,
incurring the evanesce of our very definitions.
However, a break in the monotonous chatter often finds:
a breath of fresh enlightenment. New depictions.
A new sense of rule breaking.
In being alive.
vilipenditory: disparaging, belittling
logolepsy: obsession with words
evanesce: to disappear gradually
Gamblers of the Highest Stakes
We gamblers of the highest stakes, we play
for keeps. We play for Fortune’s luscious lips
gleaming in a most licentious display
as we clamor like dogs under tight whips—
we never had a chance! We bet it all.
Every chamber, every vessel, every drop,
we had to match perfectly to call
the bluff. To win, we thought, we’d hit the top!
To lose never entered our infallible
minds, not with such temptation, the promise
of something so pure, an incurable
passion ever-breathing fire! We miss
the obvious: when you gamble with a heart,
your destruction may be Fortune’s work of art.
