BigMarty's RECommendations

Some pretty big news was announced today — I'm gonna direct a movie I wrote!  It may be the biggest announcement of my life and I'm super excited about it. :oD

I wanted to take a minute and discuss what this news means for us at hitRECord.  This feature project is going to be a traditionally produced film.  One day I aspire to do an entire feature film using hitRECord.org's open-collaborative creative process.  However, I think it is  important to have experience directing a feature in the traditional way.  I do hope the hitRECord.org community will be involved in this project some how, in various ways — and, I'll discuss that soon when the time comes...

But, what does this mean for hitRECord while I'm directing this feature?  Well, we've been planning for this internally for quite a while.  hitRECord has grown a lot as a production company.  And we've outgrown the infrastructure we built two years ago for hitRECord to operate with.  We've proven ourselves — creatively and businesss-wise.  So, IT IS TIME TO EXPAND!  Wheras it has been a mostly full-time job for our team, it'll now be a very full-time full time job for our team.  I'm going to be hiring more people (we're job creators!) and I think we're going to be able to operate more efficiently.

In the past, hitRECord has had more opportunity than we've been capable of taking on - and that's a good thing.  It's time to expand to help realize our full potential.  We've been planning hitRECord's growth for a while now to coincide with my feature film project.  What we're doing here at hitRECord won't falter, it will accelerate.  In the coming weeks, we'll get into the specifics about how everything will work.  I can't wait to share some of this stuff with you.

I was telling Jared yesterday that the work we've been doing here at hitRECord — the constant collaboration and creative output — makes me feel like I'm trained and ready for the marathon that is directing a feature film.  Thank you for that.

And, thanks again.

The best is yet to come...

(I added this to the Summer Collection collab because I know we have sold posters in the past and thought that this could possibly be produced as a poster print.)

Since the end of the show, I've been trying to figure out the best way to express all of my jumbled thoughts and feelings about it. Watching the livestream, I felt moments of excitement and indescribable pride. SO many times, I smiled and laughed, marveling at all that we have accomplished -  a few times, I winced and bit my knuckles in uncertainty.

When I woke up this morning, I wasn't sure what I wanted to say. And so, I started cutting up some paper. And soon I realized, as the pieces came together, we have SO much to celebrate. Some things last night were PERFECT, and others were rough and a little awkward - but that's the great thing about hitRECord. We try new things, we take chances, and we move forward in brand new ways. I love what we've accomplished so far, and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Six years ago, Will got cancer in his back.  Obviously, that sucked.  But he and his best friend, Seth, coped with the tragic situation by finding the humor in it.  After he got better, Will decided to write a comedy inspired by what happened, called 50/50.  Seth produced the movie and I played the character inspired by Will.

I know that even in the darkest times of my life, there have been those unexpected moments, circumstances and stories that just make me laugh my ass off.  I want to start a collaboration for those kinds of stories.

Contribute your tragic/comic story here.  Tell us about something terribly unfortunate in your life, but do it with a sense of humor.  You could write your story in text, you could RECord yourself telling the story into your camera or microphone, draw a picture, write a song, whatever's comfortable.

Then I'll direct our creative collective of RECorders to adapt some of those stories into short films.  You know how we do it.  Maybe they'll end up animations.  Maybe they'll become scripts for actors to peform.  Maybe they'll become musical numbers.  We'll see.

Laughing and crying come from the same place.

You know where.

thanks again...

Text_notecard_shadow_top_left BURNING dAN brightly embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as "the creative spirit." He was my chief collaborator on the foundational incarnations of hitRECord.org over the years and continues to inspire us ever the more. He would absolutely positively insist that we not let this bad news deter us on our collective mission. That said, I might not feel up to it for a little while.

Watching this community blossom into what it has become never ceased to amaze him and me. We would regularly marvel at it and high five. Thank you all for that. There he is now pouring heaping hollowed watermelons full of love over each and every one of us.

Let's celebrate him, he's fucking awesome:

Yes, I know it's .org and not .gov
This was done intentionally to help advance US government funding for the arts - instead of the funding of weapons.

Might as well make the tee shirt movement into a positive political movement.

PLEASE READ:

The stimulus plan and the arts -

"In the final jockeying over the bill, however, the funding was reinstated—a seeming victory for the arts. Yet this funding—the subject of such vehement opposition from many Republicans and Democrats—consists of just $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Fifty million dollars is 0.0063 percent of the total $787 billion stimulus package.

The money comes in addition to the annual budget of the NEA, which is a miserly $145 million. (The NEA budget in 1978 was $123,850,000; that would be almost 400 million in current dollars.)

All told, less than $200 million in federal funding will go to the arts.

The sum is less than the budget for a single Hollywood blockbuster.

It is a fraction of the amount spent on a new sports stadium.

It is less than the amount spent in Iraq each day for US military operations.

The situation of the arts in America in general speaks to the philistinism, ignorance and avarice of the ruling elite. Anything that doesn't "make a buck" is considered a waste of time. More than that, the people at the top of American society have no interest in seeing themselves reflected honestly in art. The picture would not be a pretty one.

American capitalism leaves art and artists at the tender mercies of the market. With their wealth threatened, large corporations and wealthy individuals have less and less interest in contributing to cultural life."
