"...You've been smoking pot again haven't you?" "What? No." "Don't lie to me! Look at your eyes, they are full of shit." "I have brown eyes!" "But look, your eyes are all small and squinty!" "...Dad, we're Asian!" |

There is a language barrier here but I think you can tell how excited this couple was to be in our presence again. I needed to go through this for my own growth.

FADE IN: INT. APARTMENT - DAY DUANE dials his mother on his cellphone and lets out a deep breath of air. He paces back and forth in his living room rubbing his head with his free hand. The telephone rings until it picks up on the other end. MOM: Ohhhhhhh? DUANE: Hey Mom. I got some bad news. MOM: News? I no watch news. DUANE: No Mom not the news on TV. MOM: You watch too much TV Du-AHN. You need to study. DUANE: Study for what? MOM: You go be Doctor. DUANE: Mom, I'm not going to get into this with you. I got laid off today. MOM: What's this 'Lay off'? You fall down? DUANE: (beat) No. Silence over the phone. Duane closes his eyes. DUANE: (Cont.) I got good news! I'm going back to school! MOM: Ohhhhhh?! I tell yo' Dad. How much money you make? DUANE: OK! I gotta go study. MOM: You study. Send money soon. Bye bye! Duane hangs up his cell phone and sits at his desk. He turns on his computer and Googles 'How to become a Doctor'. FADE OUT:

I decided to watch the sunrise over Lake Michigan this morning - I've never done that before. Just something I wanted to share.

Fuck. I didn’t want to go through with this. I sat in my dad’s old 69’ Chevy Camero, with the engine running. Just me and David - the windows cracked just barely for us to smoke our cheap cigarettes we bought at the gas station on the way. David looked out the window past the raindrops left on the windshield. The traffic on Silverbell Rd. seemed sparse from the church’s parking lot. Surprising considering that today was Sunday - maybe people didn’t feel like praying today. I knew I didn’t feel like praying to God or whatever was supposedly watching over us. I had the radio on low and we both sat in silence. The Everly Brother’s were playing low and quite fitting for the situation. Dream, Dream, Dream on… One of us had to go in there to give a eulogy for our father in about twenty minutes - none of us prepared anything. As the older of the two of us, I felt that I should be the one to talk to all the people that came to pay their respect for my father. Putting David up to this task would seem like all of the embarrassing moments I forced David to do when we were younger. I don’t know why I always did those things, like telling him to drive off the front porch on his bike. He fell on his shoulder and broke his collar bone. I felt bad but also satisfied. It must be some sort of gene in the eldest sibling. It’s like a compulsive urge to affirm my power over him. I’ll resist that urge today… I put my cigarette out in the ash trey as the song faded out. I opened the driver’s side door and stepped out of the car. I grabbed my coat and adjusted it until it fit just the way I liked it. I shut the door and walked towards the church. David stayed in the car. |

She smoked three cigarettes, in hopes that they would change the way she felt about where she was headed.
Was she doing the right thing?

1. Who are you and what do you do? My name is Duane Kim Baldwin, an Ameri-Asian sensation cruising across the nation in a sweet ass space station... I work at a stage theatre in Chicago editing video and scheming up start ups. 2. What's the origin of your artist name? It started as a quick name from my favorite band Incubus but has evolved into something of a reminder for myself. Enjoy yourself everybody - you are the best you ever. 3. What has been your biggest challenge with your art so far? Following through! For me it's a matter of showing up and doing the work as opposed to being distracted by...oo a hot dog... Just kidding. I find that it's important to schedule yourself time to create and if you happen to miss your scheduled time, it's important not to make yourself wrong. 4. Who or what is your biggest influence? In college I was very emo and took to Jim Jarmusch films - I stll like him very much today but my biggest influence now in the midst of my transformation is community. With all of you, with those in Chicago, when I volunteer, my frirends and family etc. I don't think we acknowledge ourselves enough of what we can offer our own and other's art. 5. What is your wildest story? I got very drunk with my roomates in college and then stole a caution cone on the street (I thought it would look good in my driveway). Long story short, the police chased us down a dark sidewalk and handcuffed us all. We had some Busch Light in our pockets and the cops were very excited because they thought they would be able to give us MIP tickets (minor in possession). Unfortunately for them we were all 21 and were let go scott free. We had a beer to celebrate... 6. What is the last book you read? I read a lot, most recently the Andre Aggasi autobiography 'Open'. Right now I'm finishing up 'The Shining' (again). I seem to need to have multiple books going at once - much like a television. 7. If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be? Jack Sparrow...Beach, Rum, never shower? SIgn me up! 8. What couldn’t you live without? My girlfriend Brook...and Beer. I like beer. 9. What is your secret talent? I was on the dance team in high school. I know various N'sync dances from back in the late 90's. 10. Tell me about the last dream you remember having? Too sexual...But I will tell you that it involved a clown, Chinese checkers and Bacon... 11. What are you craving right now? More Guinness... 12. What was the last song you fell in love with? The Freedom Song by Luc & The Lovingtons 13. Can you hula hoop? Nope. Totally butt-less. 14. What do you like? People being self expressed and making a difference. 15. What do you dislike? The dentist, shaving, and sleep. 16. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? In regards to art I was told to "obey it". Whatever your calling is - music, dance, painting, writing, acting you should obey it and express it no matter where you're in your life. There's no better time then now. The world is at your fingertiips. 17. How and why did you start RECording? Honestly I googled "Joseph Gordon Levitt" after I saw 500 Days Of Summer and this site poped up. I had a couple shorts I did and uploaded it. Since then I've met some awesome people. |
