- a new hevn (Joe narration)
The rhyming creation myth by wirrow and Metaphorest. I tweaked the words just a little, and my draft of the text is resourced below. And here I recorded a reading of it. There's already been lots of great readings of this poem, and I hope there are more to come. I think it might be cool to mix a grand multitude of voices together to tell this story.
The next thing that probably ought to happen is for visual artists to start drawing specific parts. Pick a stanza you like, or even just one line and turn it into any sort of image. Maybe pretty soon we could have a bit of a storybook slideshow going, which is usually an important step in big animation projects.
wirrow first Released this song back in the springtime. The first thing I did after the first time I heard it was email dan, saying "I found your new favorite song." He and I share a love for the pleasantly repetitive.
Other musicians added to it, PixelPilgrim and ChenelyWelly added to wirrow's vocals from the female persuasion. Nels Cline played hot guitar. Jeff Peff added percussion and edited the whole thing together into its current form.
The hypno-face template is one of the cooler aesthetic feats our mass collaborative process has achieved so far: wirrow drawing the first face, then hundreds of hitRECorders coloring it into diversity.
And the work of a whole lot of video artists went into this montage I've cut. Too many to name in this description, but I'll cite the resources below. (I've listed some so far, but I'll have to dig around to find the rest) The footage of dan spinning comes from Vanya, who is well intent on uploading the resource, I know because he's standing right next to me.
I've been meaning to show my mom GarageBand for a long time. When we were hanging out on my birthday a few nights ago, it seemed a good time. We made a little ditty. Then Major Tom made this great stop-motion animation to it, which I just cut up a bit, et voilà.
When my mom and I sat down to RECord something, we didn't know what story we were going to tell. We just sang a little something. And now it's turned into this. I love when that happens.
- Words We're Wailing (REC Room)
When I was done writing these words, (finished it on my birthday) it seemed to me like a sort of tavern sing-along. So here's the bottom layer. Now I'd love to hear what y'all add to it.
Sing along with the chorus! Or sing along with any part of it you see fit. Play along on another guitar. Acoustic, electric, the chords are just the same old ones: G C D and Em. It definitely needs bass for at least part of it. Perhaps a drum set, although I think even more fitting would be less formal percussion. Clink bottles together, stamp your feet, knock on wood, etc. And who knows what else? Piano, fiddle, Moogs, shit, the more the merrier.
When you upload your new layer, make sure you release it as an isolated stem (in other words, by itself without any other records mixed in), so we can remix it together with all the others. Here I've released a full version as an MP3 file for listening, and also uploaded a ZIP file with stems. So, if you want us to listen to your addition in combination with all the others, you can upload that version, just make sure to also upload the isolated stem(s), either as audio files or a ZIP file.
Also, when I first wrote this and released the lyrics, and then a GarageBand recording of it, I was happy to see that quite a few hitRECorders recorded various versions of their own. LizzieMackie and Metaphorest made a beautiful one, as did TongueCutSparrow and others too. So here I hope to start a definitive bottom layer for the purposes of mass sing-along, but that doesn't mean those other excellent versions will be forgotten :o)
It's certainly a much more ambitious story to tell than the first installment of Morgan M. Morgansen. So this version is less complete than the "white walls" version of that last episode. We got a lot of work ahead of us with this one!
Time to get to work on the visuals. Lawrie Brewster, this one has a hell of a lot more settings than the last one. I'm hoping the hitRECord contingent of graphic artists can rally round and pull together on this one.
I want to do another pass on the voice over. There's the characters' gibberish to add, sound effects. And of course, music!
This is the closest I could come to a file that would fit within our video player's 500MB limit. But I'm gonna upload another higher-res file as well for those of you (and there better be a lot!) who want to download it and start adding to it.

I liked the whole original. But wanted to give recutting it a try.
This is the kind of stuff I like making too. Haven't made one like this in a while. I ought to try. Guess that's the point of that there Collab Mr. Bang started.
- Sick Again
tonight I put it up because i read a poem phonontek wrote on tumblr. i don't think he's released that on hitRECord yet. well maybe perhaps he might. His poem is called "Here Again."
http://michaeleverett.tumblr.com/post/530146045/here-again
ha! now, in fact, he has Released this here poem as a RECord here. So I've cited it as a Resource, the link's down there.
Anyway, this is one I made called Sick Again. the lyrics go...
SICK AGAIN
sick again
medicine
tired liar
strong and scared
pair us up and dance despair
with lonely cares of might and may
and dream today away away
and say the sinners of their sin
i need some more medicine
i'm sick again
sick again
medicine
sick again
sick again
First, we make our proposal how how to split up the $10,000 of contributor's profit from Sundance. Do you think our proposals are fair? Leave a REmark in the conversation page for each 'Profit Split' RECord. Let's discuss it!
Second bit of good news - we're going to SXSW! More on that later!!
- Nothing Big
Nothing grand
Nothing useful
Nothing planned
Nothing smart, or at least not very
Nothing revolutionary
Nothing urgent
Nothing hot
Maybe quiet
Maybe not
Nothing hard
Nothing wet
Nothing naked, well not yet
Nothing witty
Nothing wise
No big deal
No first prize
Nothing solemn
Nothing set
Nothing much to give or get
Nothing now but me and you
Nothing more, thanks, that'll do

Let's make THE NEW DEAL RECord snap crackle and pop This RECord, in particular, should really be made collaboratively. That way, the content of the ideas will be reflected in the form of the sights and sounds. The ideas in THE NEW DEAL are the culmination of over a year's work between me and a whole slew of talented friends, colleagues and family. The video (SO FAR) is something I put together fairly quickly. Which is why I need your help. The substance is there, but it needs a bit more style. I think the two basic things it needs are: VISUAL LAYERS, and MUSIC. Any idea or sentiment that resonates with you, if you can figure out some way to represent it visually, either with an image or a piece of video, let us have it. We'll remix it all on top of my talking head to create a feast for the eyes. And any ideas you have for accompanying music, let's hear it. This thing should clip along. I can pretty much guarantee you that this video will be one of the Results I throw on at the SUNDANCE screening. So if festivals float your boat, this might be a good project to hop on. thanks in advance, looking forward to seeing what we can do! <3 |

HITRECORD.ORG is a project I started almost five years ago now, and in 2010, we've evolved into a full-fledged professional collaborative production company.
On new year's day, I released this video called THE NEW DEAL in which I've layed out what I want to do with hitRECord, how we're going to do it, and why.
In a nutshell: we create and develop art and media collaboratively here on our site; we use my position in the traditional entertainment industry to turn that creativity into money-making productions; and then we share any profits with the contributing artists.
In a nutter shell, we just have fun making things together. Videos, writing, photography, music, anything -- we call them all RECords. Are you RECording?
again by heart...
Video Editors: Show us what you got - please cut together our videos into an entertaining telling of the Sundance Experience.
People at Sundance: RECord bite sized pieces of your Sundance experience. Videos less than 30 seconds help our video editors can rock it.

For some reason, the last Morgan episode never had a proper collaboration page. Well, that shan't happen again. Metaphorest just graced us with another beautiful short story featuring our man Morgan and his lovebuddy, Destiny. The foodpenguin is back and sourly donning a panda head. And as any good plot thickens, an antagonist must take the stage. I've RECorded a first try at voiceover for it. And I recently got together with Lula to shoot our "white-walls" live action rendition. We were joined by a good friend and great artist, Chan, to play Lionel. I'm in the middle of cutting that, hope to get it done early next week. There's also loads of work to be done on this episode's setting, the Zeppelin Zoo! Lawrie Brewster -- for those who don't yet know, Lawrie's the VFX guru who came out of the woodwork, shocked us all and raised the morgansonien bar with his lush landscapes -- perhaps you and I can help bring all the great hitRECord graphic artists together to collectively create the appropriate animalium. Then of course, there will be the score. I already talked to Nathan, so instrumentalists of the hitRECorchestra get ready! And I'm sure there will be much more henceforth, forthwith. Onwards! |

- Morgan & Destiny's Eleventeeth Voiceover
|
Alright, we've amassed a whole bunch of RECords from SxSW 2010. Of course, there's probably more to come (I haven't yet gotten to upload any of the video I shot) but I think it's time we start cutting this stuff together into some cool little movies. VIDEO EDITORS - this is largely a job for you. It could be documentary style, it could be something totally arty or abstract. Your call. MUSICIANS / GRAPHICISTS / OTHER ARTISTS - throw your spin onto it. Put your music under it. Draw your interpretation of something somebody says. Or write a response. Anything. ALBUM COMPILERS - even without any outside RECording tools, you can be super helpful to this project by simply compiling an ALBUM of your favorite SxSW 2010 RECords. We've got so many of them, simply combing through and finding the good stuff is an invaluable part of the process. |

- Soul & Serotonin
Overnight tonight, I'll upload a zip of all the stems/resources/ProTools files, etc. (YIKES! the tech problems grow and my shit's erased! unless some miraculous recovery happens, the files no longer exist! Well, I guess I'll just have to play these drums again. It'll be better the second go-around) This could definitely use a better mix, ahem...
I wanted to add more stuff (bass especially) but, surprise surprise, i'm having troubles with the ol' REC Room rig, and at this point it crashes when I add anything new to the project? :o/
Also worth noting that I generally like to encourage everyone to record themselves on video when playing music. You just never know when that visual element might come in handy. I did not do that here, partially out of tech frustration, and mostly because my soul really just couldn't wait to play the drums already :o)

Calling all video editors. Let's collaborate to edit a killer video of 'Haus of Glitch's' REmix, "LiveActs Upbeat Version 2.0" http://hitrecord.org/records/184507 We are definatley going to play this track at the August 30th 'SITC' show and it would be great to project some video along with it. Now I know the show is tomorrow, and to make a deserving video of this track is a huge task. So let's aim for a rough draft, that doesn't need to be perfect yet, and then we can refine it for the third show. 'filmpunk' edited a great video to a different 'Haus of Glitch' track and nailed it. Lets look at his video to get an idea of how to approach this one. http://hitrecord.org/records/154073 See if each editor can select just a 10 or 20 second piece of the song to begin cutting to and then we can combine and loop all those video pieces and who knows, Im sure we can get something great going real quick. |

We have so many great contributions to the 'RE: CITIES' collaboration that it's a huge job for any single one of us to go through all 858 of them. So, let's divide up the leg work shall we. Lets collaboratively go through the 858 (or so) contributions to the RE:CITIES collaboration and make our selections of what we really regard as being quality and pertinent enough to be included into a REsult that I am going to edit for tomorrow's 'SITC' Make a Album of no more then 10 of your selections from the RE:CITIES submissions. Time Stamp where in each submission you think the RECord really resonates with you. For Example, write in the album, this submission from 3:20 to to 3:40 is really good because ........ If you can do that It will be super helpful to the editing process and we editors can go straight to the spot hat you think is good. |

With the U.S. midterm election approaching on November 2nd let's collaborate to create a 2 to 5 minute video that inspires people to get out and vote! Why is voting is important? What is the difference between the presidential and midterm elections and why do we need to be reminded about it? Your contribution can answer these questions with be a short video, a overarching thesis, a tiny story, a piece of animation, a drawing, a painting, a poem, a song, spoken word whatever and however you want to convey this topic. Then, of course we will start REfining and REmixing them into one incredible REsult that will screen at the upcoming Fall Formal on October 28th!!! Even if you don't live in the U.S., or despite whatever political belief you may hold, you can still contribute to make this short film/video. Let's keep it fun, upbeat, cool and inspirational so the REsult can spread to the masses and motivate all to get up and vote! |
