FADE IN: EXT. STREET - NIGHT. The buildings surrounding this gloomy city street are obscured by sheeting rain. Only one person is hardy enough to brave the elements tonight - a YOUNG WOMAN. She walks quickly, face mostly obscured by the hood of her coat. In b.g. a DARK SHAPE emerges behind her in the gloom. A closer looks reveals the shape to be a MAN, early fifties. He walks slowly behind the Woman in careful pursuit. She veers off into an alley and glances briefly in the Man's direction before disappearing. He keeps walking slow, unhurried. EXT. ALLEY WAY - CONTINUOUS. She is not fooled though, and she quickens her pace once she is out of sight. The Man does the same, turning swiftly into the very same alley she has just ducked into, pausing to wipe off his glasses before continuing the chase. He tracks her via her shadow on the alley wall. The Young Woman's shadow turns left. He grins, hurrying now, certain that he has her cornered. Also turning left, he enters a blind alley... ...that is entirely empty. He blinks raindrops out of his eyes, wipes off his glasses. Still empty. He starts to circle the enclosed space. He looks up but there are no convenient fire escapes for her to have jumped onto and made her escape. One dumpster. He lifts the lid: trash only. No cellar entrances or concealed entrances of any kind. He circles again, but the alley refuses to give up its secret. INT. BUILDING - NIGHT. The Young Woman is crouching in front of a PREGNANT WOMAN, 32. Her hood remains over her face. She hands the Pregnant Woman a prescription packet of anti-nausea medication.
YOUNG WOMAN Need anything else?
PREGNANT WOMAN I'm good for now. (beat) Think he saw?
YOUNG WOMAN (shakes head) We would know if he had.
The Pregnant Woman nods but still seems troubled by Young Woman's close call.
YOUNG WOMAN I'll be more careful, I promise.
She touches Pregnant Woman's shoulder, squeezes lightly, reassuringly.
PREGNANT WOMAN Okay.
The Young Woman gets to her feet. Pregnant Woman looks on as she walks over to the farthest wall. She doesn't stop or even pause, just keeps walking until she seemingly vanishes into it. FADE TO BLACK. END. |
