“Weather’s good today, isn’t it?” “Sure.” “So, how was work?” “Fine. It was fine. The boss said something good about me.” “What’d he say?” “I don’t know. Something good.” “That’s good.” “Can we use a different adjective?” “What?” “Nothing.” “Hey, you won’t believe this dream I had last night. I think it might-” “Mean something?” “Perhaps.” “I can’t believe people say that. You have a dream about a dinosaur chasing you, and all of a sudden it’s a metaphor for the way you’re living your life.” “Because I’m always running. What’s the matter with you, anyway?” “I don’t dream.” “What?” “I mean, I used to dream. I stopped dreaming when I stopped having expectations for myself.” “And when was that?” “Hm. Five months, maybe six.” “We’ve been dating six months.” “Six months seems about right, then.” “You know what? I’m trying, I’m really trying to carry on a conversation, but I feel like I’m talking to a wall. I’m just hearing my own echoes.” “Look at what were talking about here: work, the weather, even dreams, for God’s sake. We’re just another bored couple in a restaurant, trying to carry on a meaningless relationship.” “A meaningless relationship? You know, three weeks ago we talked about getting married...” “Three weeks ago, I was insane.” “Maybe I should just go. Get up and leave, and-” “Then you’ll make a scene.” “Will I?” “But that’s alright; it’ll be the first interesting thing that’s happened in weeks.” “Goodbye. I can’t believe this.” “Bye. Waitress? Yes, can we get this other plate put away? It’s going to be dinner for one tonight.” |
