Walking down the corridors of my familiar school, looking at the signs and doors, trying to look cool, I see my own reflection in the shiny window glass, my hair cut short, my top half done, a skirt that shows my ass.
The boys all whistle at me with appreciative eyes, the girls all glare and whisper, try to cut me down to size. It's later when I know just what the whispers are about as when I turn the corner I give a little shout. I see myself in front of me, same clothes, same skin, same hair, she's ogling me with wonder, as if she had a right to stare. "Who are you?" I ask before she can, but then to my surprise she smiles and walks towards me. Am I an insect to her eyes? "Don't you know?" she asks in my own voice, her eyes so dark and cold, "I'm what you've always wanted to be, so beautiful and bold! Those whistles the boys gave you, the stares and whispers too, they were all for me, not you, you arrogant little shrew!" I gasp and look around me and see that none of them can see that the girl that they're all watching is an imposter, it's not me! |
