There was a chirp-chirping

I heard, beneath my

Realm of conscious interest

Abrasively invading

A shared realm of common

Airwaves, vibrating fervently

From a small, black, shelled

Body of a creature

Who could hardly have been said to have

“Lived”

Overwhelmed and doomed

Although carelessly unaware

Of its inhumanity

Chirp, chirp

He called, to any with an ear to hear or care

Chirp, chirp

Below a monstrous alien world

Of needless action and mindless occurrence

Above the insignificance of nature

As unconcerned with mine as I with his

Until he called

Chirp, chirp

Again

And with decisive action, I replied

And with decisive movement, I enforced

The insignificance of nature

So a wandering appendage

Wandered, most significantly, toward the

Irritatingly cheerful song

And he and I mutually created

A most satisfying noise

Crunch

And a most satisfying sentiment

Rooted itself contentedly in my mind,

Knowing, of course

That the finality of this last sound

Confirmed that he would chirp, no more

Chirp, chirp

Called another

Chirp, chirp
