Summer comes in on the wings of dragon flies. My son crouches in the muck, waiting... The first dragonfly bursts forth, wings unfurl and take a first flap. He waits for the sun to warm him to life. Another whisper of cobwebbed wings while we watch silently. He takes to the sky and my son shouts. Joy at this new beauty he's discovered. In a few days, the dragonflies abound. They dive and dip over our slate blue river. They twist and weave between the trees. If you're lucky, they alight long enough to show their veined wings and delicate colors before moving on. The fairies have all departed. The dragons are long gone. But we still have the dragonflies. |
