FADE IN:

EXT. WOOD - EVENING.

ADAM LEWIS, SIX, is rummaging through the fallen leaves, gathering acorns and stuffing them into his coat pocket with great enthusiasm.

His DAD is watching him, smiling.

ADAM'S DAD

What are you planning to do with all those?

ADAM

I'm going to plant them!

ADAM'S DAD

(laughs)

We don't have room for that many trees!

Adam looks doubtful of his grand plan.

ADAM

How many do we have room for?

Adam's dad holds out a hand for the acorns. Adam removes the ones he has already collected from his pocket and hands them to him.

His dad carefully sorts through them, setting aside those that are damaged.

Eventually they are left with six good acorns.

Adam puts them back in his coat pocket, obviously eager to get home and plant them.

INT. ADAM'S ROOM - LATER.

Six large plant pots are arranged around Adam in a rough semi-circle. He covers the last acorn with soil.

Sitting back, Adam admires his handiwork, absently wiping his dirty hands on his jeans.

INT. ADAM'S ROOM - NEXT DAY.

Adam dashes in, still clad in his school uniform, to check how his little oak trees are doing. He goes through each plant pot carefully, checking for green sprouts.

There are none to be found.

He is disappointed.

EXT. GARDEN - LATER.

Adam is sat on the lawn, miserably tugging at the grass around him.

Behind him we see Adam's dad in b.g. watching through the kitchen window.

He joins his son in the garden.

ADAM'S DAD

Trees don't grow overnight, I'm afraid.

Adam continues to sulk.

ADAM'S DAD

Are you still watering them?

ADAM

(alarmed)

No, I forgot!

ADAM'S DAD

Well, they won't grow much if they're thirsty, will they?

He gestures for them to go back inside.

Adam leaps to his feet and dashes back into the house.

INT. ADAM'S ROOM - DAY.

Adam is holding a jug of water. He tips it carefully and the water trickles down and into one of the plant pots.

He now has six little green sprouts. Taped to each pot is a name tag: PETER, PARKER, BEN, ALEX, ROBIN and WINSTON.

EXT. GARDEN - DAY.

Adam's father is digging six small holes. The saplings are at his side ready to be re-planted. Adam is sitting beside his dad, observing everything with great interest.

His father carefully removes one of the saplings from its plant pot. The roots have started to grow out through the holes at the bottom, thick and sturdy.

ADAM'S DAD

What do you think?

Adam beams, pleased as punch. He plucks at the grass out of old habit before realising what he is doing. He stops immediately, looking rather guilty.

His dad finishes up.

They stand back, and together they admire their work.

FADE TO BLACK.

END.

We planted a peach tree with our daughter's on Earth day, yesterday our 8 yr old was pulling grass around it-I thought of this... Told her she just planted 1 tree and killed 100 blades of grass- my smart ass"ness" is not reserved for just my friends of HR! She quit pulling the grass and I smiled and gave her a kiss-then told her your story! She thought it was cool! She is smarter than your average 8 yr old though. ;) <333 Mary

"Or a scene with Adam doing the same thing with his kid."

I really like that suggestion, stike. I'll add a scene like that as soon as I can. :D

Thank you for your hearts, dear hearters!

There should be one more scene with Adam and his child either looking, climbing or swinging from the trees that he planted with dad. Or a scene with Adam doing the same thing with his kid.

Trees are really about future generations.
