I added a brief bit introducing the woman who did not like her lot in life and lived as a gambling MAN in a time when women were items of decor and not allowed in card games.
I did this for two reasons:
1) I love the poem. It's awesome and I wanted to read it.
2) It's very Waits-ian. That is always a good thing in my book. But it occured to me that if it were read by an older man with a world worn voice, it might skirt the edge of appearing like we thought: "God I wish we could get Tom Waits to read this, so this guy will do instead." You know what I mean? (It's a compliment to your writing that you captured that same feel in the wording, which caused me to think a Waits-ian voice might be too much.) So I thought I'd put this option out there.
You did ask us to surprise you. ;^)
