The privatization is not official yet although it truly is sad. I dropped out of the academic path because the way that works in Greece is very time-consuming with little or no money while working on your phd and it involves a lot of sucking up in order to finally get a teaching spot in some university which I hate.. But to be honest, I left that behind because basically I wanted to have the time and energy to try my luck with music and art in general (in any way possible, professionaly or not..) although I know that I'll probably fail miserably.. Better to try and fail rather than become a professor and wonder "what if.." right? :-)
Greek islands are a wonderful place for summer holidays but I grew up on Beatles and Jeff Buckley so there's not much here for me :). People are born to run wherever they may live. I'm sure there's some New Yorker hating it over thee and dreaming of a sunny greek beach but it always works both ways.. Oh well.. Lennon said life is what happens you're making other plans so we'll see..

P.S. I hope that your decision not to go into academia had anything to do with the privatization of the Greek university system. I was there during the last days of the siege of the Administrative Building in Athens in March 2007, and it was a little bit sad.
