Rian Johnson recently wrote and directed THE BROTHERS BLOOM; his first one was BRICK. And now, he makes his first foray into hitRECord collaboration with a poem he has written entitled The Man in the Herringbone Hat.

He's thinking maybe we do it first as sort of an audio-play like the old radio days. Who wants to do a reading of it? I will soon. But we'd really like a variety of voices. Especially an old man's voice. Anybody got a grandpa with a flair for a turn of phrase?

As an actress who has done some voiceover work, I can surely see this blooming into something beautiful

As a man who frequently wears a herringbone hat, I will contribute to this occasion as soon as my recording set-up is functional again.

When first I read this poem, it had such a jaunty scansion, I thought it would do as a song. But perhaps with this new direction, a composition, a background score would be more appropriate. I would be glad to contribute any of my musical skills to this project, should someone come up with a composition. I'm not good at composing, sadly.

An idea I had during my first listen to the poem was maybe to integrate the reading itself into the piece. Its tone and language is very atmospheric, so perhaps the narrator is a character in the piece and the imagery of the poem is presented in a flashback style. I just keep picturing the ending of the piece being the narrator/reader concluding the story and puffing on a cigar on a lonely stage in a dive bar.

Just throwing that idea out there...

RichieMillenium: "Doesn't the Finnegan's Wake page 439 collaboration count as his first hitRECord foray? In fact, the first time I ever heard about hitRECord was because of a rcjohnso tweet about page 439, I do believe."

Oh Richie, oh you! ;o) Indeed, Rian did post his Finnegan's Wake video on the older version of hitRECord. For the curious, here's a link to that video. We should actually get Rian to record it here as a Reference.

Anyway, what I meant by "first" is that while I threw my two cents into that project by RECording some voiceover, this is the first time he's diving into our communal creative process, planting a seed of a project and seeing where it might end up.

Let's show him what we can do!!
