One Night
One night, we set up paper lightshades
on a string like a bracelet,
painted like the planets.
And we covered the wooden floor with rugs
and cushions
and lay on the ground
looking down on a tranquil sea,
rainbow spheres floating above,
between us
and the cratered surface
like beachballs or buoys,
bright,
red and blue.
Underneath a blanket
we watched our artificial stars
till you fell asleep
and I turned them off
so you wouldn’t miss them.
on a string like a bracelet,
painted like the planets.
And we covered the wooden floor with rugs
and cushions
and lay on the ground
looking down on a tranquil sea,
rainbow spheres floating above,
between us
and the cratered surface
like beachballs or buoys,
bright,
red and blue.
Underneath a blanket
we watched our artificial stars
till you fell asleep
and I turned them off
so you wouldn’t miss them.
