Hmmmm. So, just browsing through some records, as you do. At the same time thinking about some of the politics of this website, but lalalala, just browsing as you do. Hearting some cool photos. And I start thinking about how 'successful' collaborations get started, the ones which spawn millions of records and possibly even end up with a finished 'product'. And suddenly Im like, hmm, none of those ever started from photos. Its always a drawing or a story or a video - but never a photo. Hmmm. Let me browse through some featured records. Sure, they arent exactly an accurate representation of all 'big' collaborations, but the featured records tend to at least highlight what the 'big' ideas/collaborations were at various points in time. Browse browse browse, hey, what do you know, not a single photo in the stream in relation to any of the popular collaborations in recent memory (there was one about the Japan buttons, but that doesnt count for the purposes of this hypothesis). So Im thinking, hmm. Why are there no photos on here? There are lots of cool photos on hitrecord, I try to heart as many of them as I can, but why do they not spawn anything. Are photographs not creative/imaginative enough? Thinking: the thing with drawings/text is that it allows you to free your mind. You can draw ANYTHING you want, it doesnt have to be real. You can create worlds with your words. Combine the two, you can animate/create videos which are unreal. But a photograph? A photograph is typically something real. Of this world. You can try and suggest something with it. You can make someone curious. But somehow, photos are always tethered to this world. Is that a limitation? Challenge: a) Take more surreal/imaginative/creative photos b) Use the photos already on here more efficiently (I know a writing website which have picture challenges-> write a story based on a picture. Maybe someone should start a collab like that? Create something based on a picture? Or like a round table game, someone write something, the next person gets a random picture and needs to incorporate it into the story? Pass it on. Could be fun?) |
