Manifesto

So I've been hesitant to contribute to this, because I'm new to the site (officially joined after V4 was up) and this is intended to inform new RECruits of what this all means, and why we are doing this. I felt like what I had to say might not be taken seriously due to my novice status, and that this was a project for the veterans only. But I'd like to say that I joined before the announcement of becoming a professional production company, and before the thought of money was ever brought up, if that says anything. I know none of us are doing this for money. And maybe I didn’t need to clarify, but I thought maybe I should. Oh well.

Now that that's out of the way… Please read on.

I hit RECord.

There is this urge. An overwhelming compulsion to create and share what is in our hearts; what was born in our imaginations. This urge exists in all of us. "Look what I made! Look at my creation," we say. We present it proudly, hoping to share the joy of creation with our friends and loved ones.

Our ability to dream, to imagine, to create, is what makes us human. I try to hold on to that as much as possible. This ability to dream is our closest connection to why we are here, and it helps us when we’re trying to make sense of all this mess.

That's why I make art in general. It's my way of fulfilling what I believe to be my purpose, if there is such a thing, as a human being.

Primarily I draw and paint in my own work. I look at the world around me and do my best to translate it into my own language, and then interpret it in whatever way amuses me at the time. And that is why hitRECord is so wonderful, because my interests are all over the place, and I don't always have the resources or the time to pursue all the projects I imagine.

There’s no telling what I’ll be working on, or what medium I’ll be working in at any given time. Aside from primarily drawing/illustrating and painting: I've always been a writer; I'm interested in film and music; I enjoy taking shitty resolution pictures on my cell phone camera, so I’m kind of a photographer; plus I have some graphic design and editing experience. So it's not enough to stick to one medium all the time.

This place allows me to be a part of any number of projects in ANY medium! When I heard about hitRECord.org I immediately checked it out and fell in love with this free, collaborative, community. I found myself spending less time on Facebook (thank God), and more time searching through recent RECords and working on stuff just to RECord it on here. I love that this is a community to share ideas and inspire one another. Ideas SHOULD be shared. An idea kept to oneself does no one any good!

I've found that this is a good place if I ever feel stuck. Sometimes you just hit a wall, and you need a ladder to help you climb over, or a diversion to keep yourself busy before you find the door to the other side of the wall.

This is my ladder. A needed source of inspiration. It keeps me climbing upward. To new ideas.

My art is a way for me to share my ideas, whether I know what they are at the time or not. It also serves as a RECord of my existence. I’d like to know that I’ve contributed something to the world, even if only a small population ever sees my work. Purely satisfying that urge to create and share in the beauty and gratification of a completed creation is enough to justify my efforts.

But art isn’t purely about one artist, and one view. If that was the case then there would be no reason for museums. Because if art only matters to one person, why share it with anyone? There is a genuine human interaction that occurs between the viewer and the artist(s) through the artwork. It is a purely human experience that cannot be explained.

Collaboration is a gateway for this interaction to take place because it aligns two or more minds, as they work towards a common goal. The once viewer becomes the artist as they work alongside one another. The aim is to express a shared idea through many eyes so that it may enter an indefinite amount of hearts.

HitRECord allows for this collaboration of minds. Not only that, but it encourages it—Nay: INSISTS on it.

We must work together. We must share our ideas. We must embrace what it is to be human.

And that is why I create. That is why I hit RECord.
