I breathe you in
like others breathe in air
with every step I take
you subside into my bones,
my veins,
my everything
You infect my heart
devour, consume and swallow it
what you spit out again
cannot be called
a heart
and with every thingbeat
you spread through my body
in every little drop of blood
settle in with me
until I’m a wreck
a mere skeleton
filled with you
and only you
and my soul
crumpled and dead on the floor

I agree with seldelaterre. Those lines capture that feeling that something other than heart-warmed blood is being circulated through your veins. Something numbing (which is why "thing" is a good word choice).

    "and with every thingbeat
    you spread through my body..."

Mm. That right there is a powerful line. I like the rest of the poem but those two got me right there in the Thing.
