a work of myth
and pure imagining

the sun was dazzling on that day
the mists had curled a certain way
to make the town folk
think they had seen
what they hadn’t seen

nevernotwuz was just a tale
and no balloon or wafting sail
could lift a mountain up into the sky

the way the story goes
at least to those who’ve heard it told
is that the vision was a trick of the eye

and it was for the common good
that where a mountain had once stood
might and machine
had fully triumphed over stone

but what they don’t know, sad to say
is that the truth is on that day
the mountain had moved on its own
