I grew up listening to Garrison Keillor (reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH3mNUlAhKQ ) on Prairie Home Companion doing his character "Guy Noir". When i saw this, it felt like it could be one of those stories. So i did a recording of the text below. I will upload the version of May McDonough's Riverside that is just the instrumental parts that goes with the video. I obviously meant this character to be a man, so if any garrison keillor type voices are out there, please feel free to do your own version.
The Anglerpod Waits with Broken Heart
I kept telling myself, it was only a dream its only a dream.
So i woke up and got out of bed and turned on the tv to watch one of those late-night programs.
She still haunts me. that woman. that terrible woman. that no good doll. god i miss her...
There is an old lamp post down the block from rays tavern. sometimes i go there to wait. wait for the one who ripped up my heart into pieces. I stare at the moon and wonder if the moon was just some rock in the sky that happened to pour light into the night or if it all meant something more. it had too... it just had to...
the lamp post was my friend. i leaned on it and just thought. in the real world we were expected to always have answers but never did it ask me to explain my silence. we had a mutual understanding. a respect. and bond that couldn't be broken...
or so i thought...
ya see, the crooks in the mayors office were playin craps with our taxes and nothin was gettin fixed west of broad street. they don't care about the little guy. lousy bums.
one night after an especially terrorizing dream about you I went to my spot to shed a little light on the matter.
but my pal was no longer allowed silence. it buzzed with sadness as its inevitable demise was more present than I ever was for you.
and with a few last words it went out.
an unlikely thing. me, a tough guy, such as myself, shedding a tear for a light. or a woman.
i guess the moon would have to light my thoughts tonight.
This city. Every low life without a dime clamors at the latest hot spots waiting to see stars but all they see in those alley ways is the garbage at their feet.
One of them came up to me and asked me who i was waiting for...
I answered your name, which shot up my tongue with 20 rounds of amo.
"but she ain't never comin back, kid"
i make do with myself now that your gone. i don't know how long this will last or when i might feel like a man again. but if i turn down the tv and close my eyes I can almost hear you singing to me again, baby. and thats all i need. for now.
