This is partially inspired by Midori's awesome drawing (shown above). What does it mean to be feminine? Liking pink? Wearing a dress? Wearing makeup? Being dainty? Being weak? Being pretty? Being dumb? Having a vagina? Having breasts? Playing with dolls? Playing house? Being a mother? Liking romantic comedies? Wanting love over sex? Having long hair? Being a victim? Being cowardly? Cooking? Being virginal? Cleaning? Avoiding violence? Being emotional? Taking care of people? Being subordinate? Not liking video games, electronics in general, sports, machinery, math, science, technology, etc.? Or is being feminine simply feeling and identifying as such, while doing whatever it is you want to do-be it fixing a car, peeing while standing up, or playing with Barbie dolls? Does this word really mean anything at all? What does it mean to be masculine? Liking blue? Wearing pants? Smelling musky? Drinking beer? Eating meat? Avoiding diets? Having a penis? Being aggressive? Holding back all emotion(except anger, that is)? Being strong? Being assertive? Being sexually promiscuous? Being dirty? Having scars? Liking sports and electronics? Being smart? Being brave? Wanting sex over love? Being a hero? Having short hair? Being the one to work? Being dominant? Liking action movies? Being violent? Or is being masculine simply feeling and identifying as such, while doing whatever it is you want to do-be it dancing ballet, wearing a dress, or watching sports? Does this word really mean anything at all?
Why do we let ourselves be constrained by these binaries of gender? Why do we allow ourselves to be so limited by them?
Maybe it's time we just let ourselves be free.
