We got a great performance of “You’re Not The Only One” at our shoot at LA’s legendary Troubadour last week. And now, we’re turning the basic track over to the community to add your parts.
Please use this base track as the basis for your added parts.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
VOCALS: Lead Vocals for Verse 2, Group Unison Vocals for the repeats at the end, and harmony vocals for all of the choruses and the end.
INSTRUMENTAL PARTS: Anything and everything (!)
LEAD VOCAL: The lyrics for verse 2 are HERE. Sing out : )
HARMONY VOCALS FOR ALL CHORUSES: Currently, JerzyJung sings lead on the chorus, and Wunderboy and Joe sing harmony. You're welcome to take any (or all) of those parts yourself, to help us thicken it up. Let's get as many voices from the community singing along to the harmony & melody of all the choruses!
HARMONY VOCALS FOR END: There's a 'secondary' backing vocal part that comes in during the repeats at the end. Check my reference mix HERE at 4:17 into the song; That's the first place it comes in. Then it repeats from there.
--To listen to the individual notes for each part to learn them, please refer to these stems HERE.
GROUP VOCALS FOR ALL CHORUSES: For all of the choruses and into the long vamp, from 3:24 to the end, we want to hear as many people as we can get singing the main melody note of the chorus...No harmonies here, just a bajillion people singing the same line to take the song to the end. You can hear what we're looking for in this reference mix.
PERCUSSION AND WEIRDNESS: This song will be largely about the last set of choruses turning into a big celebratory feeling; An “everything, including the kitchen sink” sound will be big and rollicking. As Wunderboy suggested as part of the introduction at the show, whizzers and expanded percussion and the like, as well as maybe even something like a kazoo or other ‘silly’ stuff (slide whistle? toy piano?) Also, other small handheld ‘busking’-type instruments like harmonica, recorder, ukulele, accordion, banjo. Beyond that:
GUITARS: Our rhythm track is pretty solid at the moment. Another guitar idea or two could be good, so we’re open to hearing what you’ve got there. The part we’ve got so far is a clean rhythm part, so maybe something a bit heavier, maybe only in the prechoruses, choruses, and bridge? That’s what comes to mind first.
HORNS / WINDS: Definitely in the end chorus, we’d love to get a kinda haphazard, “Salvation Army Band” feeling. Trumpet? Trombone? Tuba? Clarinet? Playing lines AROUND the melody? The main melody here which is going to be sung by the group vocals will be so strong, it won’t need bolstering, nor will anything else have much of a chance to be heard through it. It’ll be great if your horn parts can be arranged as a traditional part that repeats each time the chorus loops, but if you do, I’d still encourage some fun improvising over the last set of choruses too, so that we can build some cacophany there. Any horns you might add to the earlier parts of the song should be more “properly”-arranged, in keeping with the solidity of the form and track.
ANYTHING ELSE: Um...duh…? Whatever you wanna try, if it sounds good, we’ll use it : )
IMPORTANT: When uploading your work, please include a reference mix of your part(s) in context, and then individual tracks, so we can incorporate your parts into our final mix. Your file start time should match the file start time of our base track, including any long stretches of silence, to allow us to sync it up easily. Also, tracks should be dry (no reverb), please.
