Throughout history, people have been predicting the end of the world. We seem to have a fascination with our own demise.
A few examples:
The year 1666 was believed by some Christians at the time to be the beginning of the end, 666 being the supposed number of the devil and all. It didn't help that they had a pretty crappy few decades leading up to it, like plagues and such.
Nostradamus is everyone's favourite purveyor of doom and gloom. People believe his predictions to this day.
In 1910, the close passage of Earth by Halley's Comet (along with data that suggested the tail contained poisonous gas) sparked fears of the end of the world.
Then of course, there's Y2k.
Even more recently, the Mayan end of the world doomsday scenario in 2012.
THE WORLD IS ALWAYS ENDING!
I imagine a short film where a village somewhere continually gets worked up over a doomsday that never comes.
