Update: I've written a RECord following on from this: There Goes My Gun: Draft Zero (Hot Air Balloon Gun Duel)
This is a bloody ace idea for a short film.
I think it should be filmed in the style of a silent film using title cards for dialogue and exposition.
So we have Mademoiselle Trevit on the ground and the two duellists (Monsieur de Grandpre and Monsieur le Pique) go up in their balloons.
I think some cheesy special effects would be good here in the style of Georges Méliès. In fact it should all be in this style.
(Here is a YouTube link to his classic "A Trip to the Moon / Le Voyage dans la lune - 1902" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JDaOOw0MEE)
When Le Pique's balloon is hit we would have a really elaborate descent Méliès style, with the balloon fizzing about all over the place, maybe even over the moon, before eventually crashing to the ground.
Mademoiselle Tirevit runs over but it is too late - he is dead.
De Grandpre lands his balloon cool as a cucumber and suavely comes over to Mademoiselle Tirevit who takes Le Pique's gun and turns to De Grandpre.
"Die you motherfucking pig!"
And fills him full of lead Tarantino-style...
