I think the score for this piece is going to be another very understated and simple one. There’s a lot of emotion in the film already, and we don’t need to enhance it much. But we do want to give it some depth by adding score, just the same. Also, it takes place in a very small, internal environment, so I think a wide, grand sound would be a little disorienting. It seems to be calling for something like ‘just a piano’, or guitar, or some other single polyphonic instrument, with an addition of a small handful of other textures if you’re so-inclined. You might look at it as a series of sections or motifs that play for a bit, then breathe for a bit before moving onto the next one, rather than a long, continuous piece. Of course tho, if you’re hearing things differently, by all means, let’s hear it.
I think the most important thing in this score will be the timing of ins and outs, and leaving some spots without music altogether, to allow the important areas with natural, genuine emotion in the picture to stand on their own without music. A very slow tempo is probably in order.
Here are my thoughts on music in-and-out timings. Of course, you’re free to do as you’re feeling, but if you’re looking for some direction, here’s how I think music can be most effective (and not disruptive) for the piece:
01:00:00:00-01:00:22:10 No music
