RegularJOE and I had a conversation about the Bad Advise collaboration and we both agree that people are contributing really great work so far! There are so many clever remixes of popular cliche's that it's quite exciting. And the visuals supporting these remixes are really on point for the most part.
I find it's the idea is working when the remixed phrase instantly reminds us of the cliche that it's referencing. Some examples of this are:
- What Goes Up Might Stay Up
- A Penny Saved Is Still Just A Penny
- Great Minds Think
So I recommend that we all go thru the contributions and re-read the remixes to see how quickly we are reminded of the original. And if you have an idea to refine or adjust a contribution to better reference the original then please go ahead and remix it.
Another thought is, we can reference the original phrase visually if the opportunity allows us to. For example:
- belcaths1981's poster for Kavonne's phrase "Unite And Occupy". The word's are a remix of the phrase "Divide And Conquer" but one won't necessarily understand that just by reading the poster. But if the original cliche "Divide And Conquer" was in the visual and crossed out or something - the viewer would get the word play instantly.
You know, with the Sundance collaborations behind us, this collaboration can be a lot of fun because we all don't really know where it will go. Where as during Sundance, they projects had very definite roles with very definite results. The Bad Advise collaboration kinda provides us with an opportunity to just play and see where it will take us. You know that's exactly how Tiny Stories began too :)
With that said - if you have an idea of what type of final product this collab is heading toward, please let me know, because I really don't know yet.

We get a lot of bad advice in the form of platitudes, slogans, and cliches.
This is a collaboration to remix popular phrases with which you disagree into a form of reverse propaganda.
TO CLARIFY: TAKE A COMMON PHRASE YOU THINK IS BAD ADVICE, AND REMIX IT TO BE GOOD ADVICE. (not the reverse)
AND, it's important that the remix makes a clear reference to the original phrase, otherwise it won't really make sense.

Out of Many, One --> Out of One, Many
Let's get text records in the form above, and then let's get graphic artists to remix them into propaganda-style posters.
(p.s. As a personal favor to me, let's try to avoid the badly over-used "Keep Calm & Carry On" meme here :)
