I generally avoid these things cos of the pressure to sound interesting but what the hey...I'll keep it brief so at least if it's dull it's over quickly!
Who are you and what do you do? I am Sarah and I do writing and singing. And occasionally I do other things as well, if the mood takes me. What's the origin of your artist name? It was a moment of pure epiphany when I realised the transformative effect of adding an ‘est’ to the end of the word metaphor! (I.e. I just thought it sounded clever and I love puns) My monikers are generally sucky so I was quite smug with metaphorest. What has been your biggest challenge with your art so far? Umm getting to the point where I can just about make a living off it? I did very little arty stuff while stuck in various soul destroying jobs. I worked in a fish factory, a pound shop, a sock shop, in customer service, for a market research company, in a guesthouse, as an audio typist, in a bar and in a company that made software to publish airline manuals before I got to do mostly arty things for a living. Who or what is your biggest influence? I find gravity quite influential After that – writing wise I’m not actually the biggest reader –not since I was a kid at least. I’m not much of a guru or buff on anything much really, though I’m trying to be more artistically aware. My muse is a fickle one – she just barges in when she feels like it then buggers off. As regards real life people – family and friends are big supporters and hence influencers of what I do. What is your wildest story? I once fainted at a Radiohead concert and had to be carried off – then couldn’t manage to book anywhere to stay so hung about in the Hilton lobby and MET ED AND PHIL! Then got a taxi and slept at the airport. But really I’m a homebody who spends most of her time in pyjamas watching Masterchef... What is the last book you read? The Liar by Stephen Fry. I love a bit of ol’ Steve. His brain bit mostly. The book wasn’t quite as fantastic as the man but I believe it was his first novel so I’ll allow it. If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be? Sebastian in the Neverending Story! (I can pick a boy character if I like dammit!) No scratch that – I’d be Atreyu! At the time when I read the book/watched the film I wanted to be the princess girl but fuck that. She was so whiiiney! What couldn’t you live without? TEAAAAAAA! Frickin love tea. It fixes almost everything. What is your secret talent? It’s so secret even I don’t know what it is. Tell me about the last dream you remember having? I was hanging out at Helen Mirren’s house, then she was supposed to drop me home but instead she took me to a shoot for a pretzel ad at a themepark with a ferris wheel made of pretzel. Typical Helen. What are you craving right now? Pancakes. Or sushi. But not both at once. What was the last song you fell in love with? Good Intentions Paving Company by Joanna Newsom. I just love that harp-playing elf-lady! What do you like? Lie-ins, chocolate, telly, pyjamas, bed socks, a good book, coincidences that make you go ooh but would be entirely unimpressive if explained to anyone else. What do you dislike? Bullshit and mushrooms. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? “You might want to leave it a while before going in there”. Just kidding – umm..something along the lines of nothing’s ever as bad as you think it’s gonna be... How and why did you start RECording? I read about the site in some newspaper and forgot about it. Then remembered it again and started posting stuff. It was about the same time I’d started writing songs and scripts more prolifically too so perhaps twas the fates giving me a nudge. Thanks fates! It’s been a great motivator and confidence booster ever since. |
