Whoo, this week was a blast of juicy goodness. The Words We're Wailing continues to gather new patrons, and le Petit Soldat marches into new directions.
This week's reRECs for 5.15.11-5.22.11 include:
Audio
1. Careless Young by amferraro. I can hear this used in a ton of video, eventually. Left intentionally & seductively nearly-bare, this song is a beautiful open invitation for folks to sing & write their own lyrics to. DreamAesthetics and Ryan_Patrick gave their own lovely renditions. More, please!
2. The Other Woman by JoeDidcot. I like the potential for REmixing, here. I immediately think of club music and slinky, sly, animal/human footage of some sort.
3. reflection song (for reflection man) by hellolistener. Take a deceivingly nondescript image by Robo_J & become inspired. I love that image, btw. I see things where they oughtn't be on a frequent basis. I love my brain!
4. The Happy Hollow's Tiny Glory Story by The Morning Hollows. Saying that 10 times fast is more difficult than standing on my head, but luckily it doesn't take that much work to appreciate the song. This is an "extended" contribution to amferraro's a request to all singers collab, and it certainly is fun. eaneikciv added her merry little vocals to this version, and it makes me want to play hopskotch, skip & blow bubbles.
5. Rubber Stamp [Doo Wop] by pamagotchi. Fearless, fearless, I tell you! :D This made me giggle myself silly, as I happen to love Doo Wop, and I also love the original poem by Metaphorest.
6. Today I tried to Fly by Ryan Patrick. Darn, this is a **post-edit** on 5.29.11. It takes about 2-5 hours for me to do reRECs, as I'm always off & twiddling away on other projects in between. I end up with REsourced stuff, but no explanations for them. Sorry, folks. I'll try to catch my mistakes sooner.
Video
1. Scope by Mr. Green. This is like paper towel for the brain: absorbent. Well, I was absorbed, anyway. The footage is grainy, mixed, bright, moody, and just plain fascinating to watch. The music used impresses me with its capacity to evoke emotional upheaval. It's like getting a piggyback IV of amferraro & PASIV, then simply not being able to find my brainpan, for a while.
Speaking of two of our many lively maestros: if you are new(er) and haven't explored amferraro or PASIV's work, you should certainly consider doing so. You will be glad that you did. ♥
2. Foreign Sounds (in the night) REmix by Kavonne. The tearjerker tune by amferraro has been given new life with more film clips. There is plenty of room for interpretation, here. I like the sequence of the of images quite a lot; I was idly wondering what else could fit (because I'm wackadoo that way!), or be re-cut into.
3. bEarth by Zhakey-Bear. I had to watch this a couple of times. It's quite abstract (but I really like abstract), and I liked trying to figure out what shape-forms would come next. Johnnyclyde's Robot Dreams composition makes it even more compelling. I did love pausing this at different intervals, and the stills that I captured from it are going into my Halloween-y collection. I really ought to post that, eventually... hmmm.
4. Wanderer Remix (todd) by todd68976. I sometimes feel that there are-- tacit agreements, shall we say-- about doing or not doing certain things with other people's RECords, here. However, I frequently choose to be rudely oblivious to that reality. That being said, I pretty much want to hug todd for deftly REmixing marieIv's ever-evolving, much-beloved, and fricking fantastic animation of Wanderer. Possible interpretations of underlying meanings of the story changed, and the emotional impact, for me, was huge.
Text
1. Wicked Dash by Inked Canvas. I may have stifled an "Eeep!" of horrified amusement, after reading this Tiny Story. Take a slug, add some salt... Eeep!
2. Thunder Beat by attilee. I was hearing music box-type music for this, accompanied by violin, in my head. A film short was on its way, before I was rudely interrupted by The Real World. I might try to piece it together, again...
3. How it All Began (Dearth of Preparation) by ruffedges. Wee, this style of writing gives a new twist to MattConley's How it All Began collab. It's deeply personal in a manner that makes a person cheerfully want to get to know him better. Who's next to tell the tale of How it All Began?
4. Ghosting by bblest. Some days I cannot get out of my own head. I like this a lot by its own, but in my mind I tore it apart (sorry, love!) & added things from other text RECords, to make something new. I also added bagpipes, but that's another story.
Image
1. Stand Alone in the Rapture by Jnyfer. Gaw, so incredible. I looked & looked & then looked some more, intrigued as to why I was apparenly in love with an image that was devoid of schnazzy color. However, this painting does not lack feeling. It's kind of like B&W footage that way.
2. Brutal Waltz: The Smoke by sBo. I love the colors & texture.
3. Empty by Speric. The more I keep on rummaging through people's RECords, the more awesome stuff I find. I have a thing for pictures of windows; this one makes me want to crawl up, out and through, somehow.
4. The Stars Above by Susan0987. Many views & a fair share of hearts, but I really would love to see something else done with this. The colors of her palette make me smile softly.
5. Blue Rust by rejjie. There have been some mighty fine REleases by rejjie this week, and this one was one of my favorites. I thought it might be good for a backdrop, or inspiration for something else. I thought of ocean water, unhappily contained in a swimming pool.
6. Re:building 47 by Theabones. I just like it. I want to see more birds flying around it. Maybe a princess is letting her hair drip out of a window. Maybe a knight in shining underpants is riding towards the building. Who knows.
7. Balloons by fragilefashions. I saw this explosively bright image right after I watched "Scope," and I was knocked flat. It's kinda like martial arts, that way. Hiiiiiya!
Album(s)
1. Sand Alphabet by crayola_sky. Weee, English letters in the sand! I love the natural texture of the letters, and the comforting color of the sand. Now, if someone could just get the Spanish/French/Russian/etc. letters doodled, out there...
2. Shadowplay: a novel in chapters by Flockofwords. There's a storrrrrry to read! I love Flockofwords's writing style to begin with, and this was so much fun to read through. Her voice is in her words, and it makes it very enjoyable to be in the same room. New characters. New developments. The best part is, it's all up for grabs. It's there to make your melon juicy. In a good way.
3. hitRECord music loops by gweninterrupted. *gawps* Holy Hannah preserve us... this album was Featured, and I'm quite happy about that. This is a juggernaut, pure & simple. The album has some amazing, quirky results. Most loops are 20 seconds or less. In doing the loops, she also dug up about a gazillion RECords that I'd never heard of, before now. Talk about an obscene wealth of REsources! Whoohoo! Many hearts to you, Gwen. ♥
This week, I'm encouraging/challenging folks to be fearless for at least 20 seconds. Not necessarily fearless-stupid (but if that works for you, so be it-- please hit RECord to let us know you're alright), but fearless in your creativity and actions.
So, that's not it, but that's it for me. Cheers & Happy RECording!
Last night I dreamt that I was a robot living with this family in a giant tower apartment thingy with huge windows in this giant futuristic city. When I was done helping out the family it was time for bed, so everyone went to sleep and I positioned myself infront of the window and went into charge mode so I could pretend to sleep. When I woke up in real life, I thought "I wonder what a robot would dream if a robot could dream."
So I wrote this song
This picture can now also be found on my website www.paintingsbysusan.magix.net
Just another doodle for Haus_of_Glitch's Brutal Waltz. I kind of like the idea of the Smoke as this sinuous movement insinuating itself into the industrial rhythms of the music. There's something creepy about that contrast. I see each pair of Proms wreathed with a Smoke so that what starts at first as a duet actually becomes a trio. In the end, only the Smoke are left.

Sung by the wonderful Metaphorest, and beautiful piano playing by Suzyrene. Todd68976 suggested that I add accordion to this lovely song, and so I did with much joy :)

Dearth of preparation
With indolence I was born, No desire to create. A ragging child to ... |

Clappy happiness in my head.
I loved The Morning Hollow's take on Metaphorest's poem so I couldn't resist singing along.
While riding on the Los Angeles Metro Rail Gold Line (Pasadena to/from Los Angeles) at a particular time of day, I've twice come across this. The sun's glare reflecting off the side of the train onto the concrete wall makes this appear. For some reason, my brain made this reflection look like a person. Can you see it too? long nose, little eyes, maybe a knit cap or something. the indent in the concrete makes it look like he's holding a walking stick. Twice, this little character has appeared. My camera died when the reflection began creating other characters on the walls, but i'll get more as they go along. <3
In the meantime, why not give this guy a story? A name? An adventure?
What would a robot dream of? What would the fog dream of? Two very interesting questions asked by Johnnyclyde. I had been working on this video for about a month when I stumbled upon this beautiful piece of music the other night. Whilst investigating what would happen when I played it over the video, I was absolutely amazed at how synchronized it already appeared to be without any editing. I knew immediately I had to use it. So thankyou Johnnyclyde for this awesome lil' tune, it's incredible. I hope you like the video! :) Jake
Ps - Sorry it's a little pixilated if viewing in large screen, I had to convert the original file from 2.70 gigs to dv format to upload it. If anyone wanted a sharper image for download, I would happy to send as zip file :)
I loooved this piece by Metaphorest, and I was thinking about it at work and this tune came into my head.
And then this happened.
I made up the harmonies so I hope they are alright. I know the timing and things goes off a little, but I hope it gets the idea across! I imagined lots of brass/trombone blaring at the pauses ^__^

Oh I'm not one for extremes
Oh I don't have big dreams
Or grand schemes
I'm a rubber stamp.
[A Rubber stamp]
Oh I drink out from the trough
And not from dainty cups
Yeah that's enough
I'm a rubber stamp
[A rubber stamp]
I'm a stage-left observer
An certainty swerver
A slow stepper
A limelight leper
I'm a rubber stamp
[A rubber stamp]
Oh though I'm trying to improve
I'm just too slow to move
Part moth at the lamp
I'm a rubber stamp.
just one of those days.
My first stab at putting the whole thing together. 35 tracks of blissful, drunken wailing. Y'know, he would have faded out......
Today I tried to fly.
And I’m not gonna lie .
I failed again this time.
But I’m still gonna try.
Well I am alone. But I’d be free if I could float. Well I didn’t build these wings just for show. I’ve got planets to see and places to go. What’s the point of these wings, if I can’t sore through the air and sing.
I am alive today.
I am going to fly away.
I can’t hear what they say.
I am flying to space.
Well today I tried to fly.
And I’m not gonna lie .
I failed again this time.
But I’m still gonna try.
I’ve got one last try, one more time I’ll try and fly. Sore through the sky or on the floor I will die. This is it, this is my beginning or my end, However you look at it will depend. I've mended these broken wings and I’ve been resting my voice to sing. I climbed that tallest mountain and for a few seconds I sang these words as beautifully as a water fountain.
I am alive today.
I am going to fly away.
I can’t hear what they say.
I am flying to space.
Today I tried to fly.
And I’m not gonna lie .
I failed again this time.
But I’m still gonna try.
This song was just so gorgeous, I had to do something with it. After listening to it a few times, I realized it embodied childhood and mornings, hence my lyrics. The title also gave me an idea where to go with it. I sang everything (softer thank I usually do) and added some layers to the oohs in the last verse. I just love playing with my Vinyl plugin. Enjoy!
I miss when the sunrise brought a new day
Not just another morning where I feel like
I'm wearing away
Why can't we live forever in childhood?
When there wasn't a care
This is more than I can bear
I just want to be young
And be one with the sun
This is nostalgia at its best
I miss my mother's sweet caress
What I wouldn't give to be
Young and careless
Why can't we live forever in childhood?
When there wasn't a care
This is more than I can bear

Metaphorest wrote lyrics and sang - PASIV wrote music - I made animation with the help of hitRecord's huge library of resources - then was made extended version of video - then Joe suggested to add sound elements to correspond with the video - after that Metaphorest and PASIV worked on this Awesome new version of the song Wanderer - then it was send to me and I just added it to the video. Hope I didn't miss anything. Interesting sequence of events :) So, it is the "third edition".
I just re-watched the video where Joe was recommending Foreign Sounds and he was talking about maybe adding another layer to the video but that he also liked the video bare. Coincidentally, cchellez and I used some footage from the video Noiry Night. For the couple I wanted to feature, I used different footage. It would be interesting to hear people's interpretation of this.
