So I am a paleoethnobotanist (or at least I was working on a PhD in that area), and I spend a good deal of time looking at microscopic plant bits. Redheadmonster's aside on Klimt in her re-recs this week made me think that maybe I had some cool photos that could maybe be useful to someone...

The seeds and twigs are scanning electron microscope photos of macrobotanical flotation samples from the mastodon digestera (poop) layer of a site in upstate NY.

These phytoliths (silicified plant cells) are reference collection grass seeds, and the photos were taken just to see if my camera would work without the fancy set up camera mount/computer hook-up with a light microscope... you can definitely see some phytolith shapes (like saddles and jigsaws) but they aren't great photos for my work, but I think they are kind of pretty...
