My idea with this recut was to tighten the focus on the incident itself and to make the stalker the second character in the story. I felt that the earlier cut had the mom playing second-fiddle and thus brought the viewers attention to the relationship between mother and daughter, eventually mining this dichotomy for the punchline itself. My attempt was to cut the mom entirely (there is also a drama-delaying phone call early on which I cut) in order to: (a) make the girl seem more vulnerable and lonely, (b) stay ambiguous about how she's feeling and about the true nature of the flirtation, (c) to end the dramatic arch on the stalker's entrance and offer the dildo slam as an empowering denouement, & (d) to speed up the entire short, cutting it's runtime in half and keeping the pacing light. What strikes me most about this true story is that-- when viewed by the girl-- it is a tale of stalking and near-rape, and-- when viewed by "the stalker"-- it is a tale of awkward flirtation and ultimately utter soul-crushing rejection. In the end, it is really only a story TWO people shared, even if one of the people afterwards shared it with her mother before sharing it with us. It is a love story gone terribly awry. It was with this in mind that I chose to put the title card in the beginning (unlike the earlier cut), while also lulling the viewer into a rom-com comfort so as not to expect the eventual shock.
