it was twelve years ago today the last time i saw my grandmother alive. i was just visiting from north carolina, and i had come to say goodbye. standing at the foot of her death bed i saw in horror just what cancer can do to a person...to my mama.
i spent the day with her, i painted her finger nails, she showed me how God had given her the gift of leaving her hands intact. in truth they were still just as lovely as i remembered. smooth skin, thick long nails, not an age
spot to be seen. somewhat remarkable on a woman of 74 years. she was still seeing the bright side as she lay there starving to death from the disease that had eaten her esophagus and stomach. she was one of those people
you hear about, one of the ones everyone loves. selfless, loving and caring almost beyond belief. she believed in God and that he had a reason to make her suffer so much. they called the pastor and my family gathered around her as he prayed. her dying wish was for us to all go to church
and for my uncles to stop fighting. no one listened.
as i said goodbye i hugged her so hard she
gasped with pain. i have never forgiven myself for that.
i got a call from my mother later that night. mama was dead. i didn't cry.
the next day was the fourth of july. i remember walking through downtown phoenix in a stooper staring at all the happy people eating cotton candy and ice cream. i laid on my back and gazed up at the fireworks as though i had
never seen anything so obscene in my life. no one could understand why i hadn't cried yet. my mother was upset. i was numb.
when i got home and prepared for bed i went through a couple of my old things. i found the head of a doll she had made me when i was a little girl. the face was constructed from white pantyhose stuffed with cotton balls.
the hair was brown pantyhose braided to look like pig tails.
the face was painstakingly drawn on with ink pens.
a sweet innocent face.
at that momment i knew that i would never learn anything from her again. i would never her her soft words of encouragement. hear her call me her "little rianita" i would never get to hug her and listen to her stories, paint over the flowers she drew, help her make empanadas and egg plant pie, that i would never be able to see her again.
i cried myself to sleep.
i wouldn't go to her cremation. but i did go to the memorial.
my aunt elena and my mother and i sang a three part harmony acapella of "jesus loves me" that was one of her favorites. i didn't believe it anymore.
12 years later i still miss her so much i feel as though razor blades are cutting my insides and i want to sob and scream. but i remember a dream i had when i was about 17.
in it i was driving my old car and my grandmother was sitting in the passenger seat with her hand out the window playing with the wind and testing the air with her finger tips. she reached back in and untied the scarf she always wore around her neck to hide her wrinkles, put her hand out the window and let the wind carry the scarf away. when i asked
her what she was doing she smiled and said "i don't need these where i am"
it kills me more than anything that i never got a chance to know her as an adult. but if there is a god i thank him for the 15 years i was allowed to learn from her beauty and her strength. she taught me almost every lovely thing i know and she showed me the beauty in life.
i love you mamma.

Often I find our own internal galaxy to be as infinite as the one that exists beyond mother earth's atmosphere. I took one of my photographs and flipped it several times along with Matt Conley's amazing drawing of Sean Lennon. Maybe we can do some more drawings of ourselves with this style!!! =D

Two sides of a person.

Zozobra ("Old Man Gloom") is the name of a giant marionette effigy which is built and burned every autumn during Fiestas de Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico, usually during the second week of September. As his name suggests, he embodies gloom; by burning him, people destroy the worries and troubles of the previous year in the flames. Anyone with gloom that they need to get rid of can come by the offices of the Santa Fe Reporter in the weeks leading up to the burn to drop off slips of paper with personal gloom written on them. Many people put legal papers in the gloom box as well. At the festival the papers from the gloom box are placed at Zozobra's feet to be burned alongside him.

I opted to do another "teaser" style poster rather than an all-out "event" poster with all of hitRECord.org's Sundance information plastered all over the image. This has more of a vintage design and hopefully attracts curiosity to what the "REC" means.

Was in a collage-y mood this week it seems. It started out as something different, then grew to something else, and it eventually went all Wonderland-y.

When I saw this on Etsy, I knew I had to get it. Just got my vintage rockabilly dress in the mail today! That skirt's diameter is MASSIVE! Now to get a crinoline.

So, recently I entered a contest to appear on Mad Men. I'm a "Mad"-dict, as they call them ... well I don't know if I'd refer to myself as that, I am addicted to the show but I'm not really fond of made-up words like that ... ANYWAY.

I got all dolled up in my finest vintage, opened a box of bubblegum cigarettes and posed for the DSLR. This photo is one of the results.

So I entered one of the other shots into the contest and asked my friends, family and e-buddies all to vote. I was feeling pretty confident as I crawled closer to the top.

Then a bunch of people came out of nowhere and started getting tens of thousands of votes a day. That's kind of crazy, isn't it? Who has that many friends? A lot of people suspected that maybe they were cheating. Maybe they are, or maybe they're super-duper popular.

Whatever they are, they're making me really desperate. So I'm here and asking you, hit(rec)orders, to help me out.

The ride to the Hallow’s Eve Ball was so long and so quiet that the beautiful witch Esmerelda fell asleep. Her snores were so loud they could be heard across the land.

As she slept, her spell faded and her horse’s reigns disappeared, causing the carriage to stop in the middle of the road.

The moon looked down on them with a smile and a laugh, knowing all too well that the oncoming mist was her love, Count Vladimir, coming to retrieve her for the ball.

I was unable to imagine a background to balance out the anxiety in our "hero's" body language. I thought this photo could be something easily manipulated/layered/dissected etc. I originally took it as a promo shot for print material for my business however the intensity of this girls face/eyes turned out a lot of photos that were more artistically driven.

I love TwistedThursday's short story, I always wondered what the Princess's side of the story was, so I just wanted to play with the idea. I was also wondering if I could try a little experiment with you guys. I made this little film of mine black and white gave little detail to the environment, as a way of giving you guys the rest of control. Kind of like a big coloring book that turns in a story. You can print it out for some hand made illustrations or photoshop it. Go crazy! This is such a plain atmosphere, which is no fit for a princess add some crazy shannigans please. Make the leaves orange and pink or add a penguin with a tuxedo. Its just a small experiment of mine,and I'm curious

Your genitals. And actually I don’t think even boobs count because guys can have boobs now, or the appearance of boobs.

So if you didn’t know what someone had down there but they looked like a boy or girl?
I’d assume, but I couldn’t state. That’s where it gets confused, people started stereotyping. Girls wore skirts, guys trousers, but now they confuse it all. You can’t really tell nowadays.

Ever wanted to be a boy?
Not properly. But I have thought guys have it easier.

Why?
The natural way. Because like girls have the period and pains and childbirth and guys get away with it.

NOT FINISHED - Normally I don't let people see things before they are done. But I wanted to show you something since I didn't finish on time. I'm very sorry. I will finish it by Monday. My director added about 15 costumes to this Saturday's shoot so I haven't had time to finish this. It is missing about half the decorations and a couple of skirt layers. Most notably missing is the antique map pieces that will connect us all over the world.
THE THEME IS: ancient nautical meets internet surfing. This image is the bodice and part of the skirt.

first quinceanera I've ever been to... it was a co-workers (who she is dancing with) daughter. I went to take picture and after editing out tables and other people I managed to get this. Isn't her dress just BEAUTIFUL?

Ok, forgive me - I hated the bright white! So I took all the decor off and I dyed the dress taupe and I am still putting the decor back on but this is the new color! Hope you like it. Should be done (for realsies) in next 24 hours! Forgive the artiste in me who had to tear up the parts I didn't like. :^)

Fashion to me is such an amazing form of art. I wish I was actually trained to "make" clothes. These are photographs of me with a dress that I designed with a dressmaker who made my sketches come alive. I'm looking for the sketch, I think I left it with him. But I'll upload it once I do find it. And yes, this one was for a wedding. My grandparents' renewal of vows on their 50th year of married bliss, to be exact. Beautiful day.

one of my favorite items in my house would have to be my uncle's old record player. you just have to wind it up for it to start ! sometimes i sit and play his old records and i just fall in love with the way it sounds .it truly makes my heart happy ! i hope one day he will let me have it !

Since you never see Destiny “narcissing herself in the doubleglass" pre date, we decided to demonstrate what a personette looks like when she prepares. Though the dancey ditty was choreographed to The Ditty Bops’ "Your Head's Too Big" we added Madrond101’s piano audio from Morgan to set the tone.

What we were hoping to happen next:
-Narration (we would love a monologuey tale or a clowny song of a personette preparing!)
-Score (some tunes to portray her datesoon nerves – we love Madrond101’s piano, but that’s what plays when Morgan prepares. Destiny prepares to something that makes her lips cherried to the max!)
-Extra girly wardrobe room (ribbons and BOWS everywhere – pink – red lips)
-what else? Anyone else wanna RECord themselves personette preparing?

For the little story : that was my birthday, and I was supposed to go to my grandparent's with my family. We arrived at the airport, I was bored and, you know, a bit disappointed... Until my brother pointed at this green-white-red plane and told me we were going to Venice during its famous carnival. "Happy Birthday" :)

I love fiddling around with masks :-) Very basic, very simple designs, here.

The original photograph was an image taken of myself through a dirty wall mirror.
Corel Photo-Paint was used for all post-modifications to the image.
The blueish eyes were created using oval masks and changes by color correction. I was trying to give the appearance of glasses and/or portals into an alternate universe. I then used two camera flair light rendering techniques for the bright spots.

The pointillist alteration into black and white was achieved with a Local Equalization Level shift. Corel also has a custom airbrush sprayer option which will create sparkles, bubbles, butterflies, and planets like the ones I used here to accent the piece. This was quick and fun. I took me longer to write the explanation.

Kabbalah is a form of Jewish mysticism which deals with exploration into the essence of God and the creation of the universe. This image is a crude, literal representation expressing how one can possibly delve into alternate dimensions with the expansion of their mind and their creativity.

After much conversation, Merrill and I have found that we have lead parallel lives and are constantly on the same wavelength. We hypothesize that in the reincarnation process of reassigning souls to bodies, our soul got split into two bodies, mine and hers. This isn't to say that we're soul mates, just that we share one.

is a huge parade that the bahamians put on twice a year, celebrating boxing day, or when the one day where bahamians had freedom. the bahamas was a slave state at one point in time, so it's really a big deal. all of the costumes are made out of crepe paper, feathers, glitter and glue. it's beautiful.

I feel like I've become terribly unproductive/uncreative and less confident since the time this photo was taken (5 years ago) - not that I was confident to begin with, so that's no good! I really want/need to start making things and being creative again so hopefully I can push myself a bit and start. This site is so inspiring <3)

(this is a costume I made for a 2005 costume event, with a group of friends. Everyone made their own costume from scratch and we collaborated on the storybook prop. It's old but it's still one of my very favourite things I've made/sewn.)

I got really inspired by fairy tales and I envisioned a red samurai that signified the sun.
I made this costume and asked my friend to model it for me.
I took the photos and then edited them in Photoshop.

Is she real? Is she a dream? Is she then? Is she now?

Christie is an anachronism, much like myself, but she carries it off much more effortlessly than I do, and in pink Chucks to boot! One of my favorite pictures of her. She always wants to visit these ruins, they make her feel at home. The title is a question, because in my mind she looks like she's just jumped out of some time portal, but then you have to do a double take and note the jeans and Chucks. :)

This was just an experiment with appropriation. I wanted to recreate a famous painting using digital photography so I chose Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson". I thought drag queens studying the female body would be an interesting adaptation! It's kind of creepy, but I think I like it. Would love to expand on this idea though, any thoughts?

Japanese summer festival
Docklands, Melbourne

I took this photo of the audience at an electronic music festival at the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum, Maryland in September 2009. I'm not sure what was going on with my camera, but the audience and furniture turned out looking pretty "electric" or "on fire" by accident. I was one of the performers at the fest and look forward to returning this September to play again.

Dude these Zombie pictures are awesome. I was looking for a cool zombie pic to finish a story I started beginning of August. I was thinking of making my own but I'm using one of yours. You totally look like a zombie!

One explanation why church doors are often red is that it indicates sanctuary (in the sense of a place you can go when in trouble).

Another related explanation is that no one should ever have trouble figuring out how to get into a church.

This used to be a church - First Presbyterian, Detroit - but is now home to a seminary, the Ecumenical Theological Seminary, Detroit. It's a fledgling seminary, and the building is being fixed up little by little, but meanwhile inside, dedicated students and teachers are examining how to minister to people in a place like Detroit, where you can earn an advanced degree inside a building that looks like this. ETS is a great school - I audited several classes there - and specializes in evening classes for people who are answering the call to ministry at a later age, as a second or third or more career.

It's also a cool looking door, I think.

One of the regular magicians for Covent Garden and though I've seen his act several times I still enjoy it. He is actually just as much a stand up comedian as a magician, his talking to the crowd being my favourite part.

This is what happens during Sociology sometimes. But it's okay, cause the class is called Self and Society, and I'm learning a lot about myself. Society will come later?

I'm working on actually making things that I can put here on a more regular basis. I know, creativity bursts are hardly regular, scheduled so I want to not promise anything. But I like empty promises.

Under which some feel the most comfortable. Others...not so much.

This is Øyvind. One of my oldest and dearest friend. I shot this film, and then a week later I brought it with my in my bag as I was meeting another bloke, a very hot bloke, to take his pictures. Talking to the distractingly hot bloke I didn't realize I was putting the wrong film in my camera. I ended up with a very bad pic of the hot bloke and lots of errored pics of Øyvind.

Hola Peeps! Trying to jot down ideas for Fall Formal story as per this week's REGULARITY. So, here goes:

What if tiny RECording devices red lights ablaze are scurrying around like nanobots on some gray, storm-skied distant place. This place should feel like the cusp of something. The REC devices begin to scurry (read ASSEMBLE) into shapes like various domicile/landscapy bits and...a THEATER (but not the look of a town hall). the THEATER should be grand, old-fashioned feeling, but somehow clean-lined (can we also do a touch of patina with sparkle?) and maybe have a big oculus. Did I mention it's night time, therefore stars will be visible (maybe even shooting stars) as the clouds start whizzing by a la time lapse. Finally, this THEATER and landscape solidify. There's a big burst of energy (an explosion visible from space that expands then contracts to pinpoint? Supernova-ish? I'm kind of picturing the light you see when the Enterprise goes into warp? Can we even do space?) that pulls people i.e. attendees, audience, hitRECorders (could get actual peeps -->collaborate here) from...wherever - bed, rooftops, offices, cars. Maybe time could slow with the explosion-to-apparating so people don't say "What if the car crashes?" etc. Oh - so people will APPARATE (I'm thinking the feel of Morgan/Harry Potter, kind of black smoke wisps, but not necessarily) into this THEATER. The should leave in their workaday garb and appear in their beautiful to-the-nines bits (varying vintages?) and smile/acknowledge each other like new old friends. As every seat fills, RECords could begin playing, I dunno, alongside/in front of/near the guests, in midair like mini projections or holograms (not sure, dream a bit here). Finally, packed to the gills, all lights ablaze, the THEATER a hive of activity and resplendent, GIF images from RKBear's poster began APPARATING to center stage (or center something). We see one last guest/RECorder, a small child, APPARATE just at the THEATER's entrance. She's holding a tiny REC device. She whispers to it "Thank you" as someone (maybe RegularJoe) leads her inside...and ya'll take it from there :^) But seriously, what do you think?

Addendum: The appearance of Lionel at the Zoo was more slinky and less abracadabra than I'm currently picturing. Wasn't there some apparating in the Morgan flicks? Maybe, just think Harry Potter for now ;^)

I hope I can join the show and hope it will be my first trip abroad too.

However, a big problem is here.

I want to photograph people who have a passion for some art form - music, film, paintings - living that that song, movie or work of art. We would collaborate on interpretations. It's just an idea rolling around right now, but I thought this group could help. I'll post this explanation with several of my images to give you an idea of what I do. I just want to be an artist, ya know? I think many of you do too.
