Inspired by a soundtrack compilation that cerebis set up, I am going to rustle up an ongoing collection of some of "the embarrassment of riches" (I love that quote! thx cerebis!) of music found here on hitRECord, that I listen to while writing, driving, etc.

I am very much a "write the scene of the music that I hear" type of person. The mood I'm already in, coupled by the interpreted mood of the music, can produce all sorts of stuff-- I call it the movie projector inside my head. Sometimes all I do is loop music, so that a particular mood might stay in place.

This is the music that dares to be repeated  :-)

i wanted this to sound church-like.. does that make sense? :/ lately i've have had this poem in my head constantly.. especially the last part. so i made this song. not very happy with vocals so if anyone wants to sing it i will upload the instrumental.
lyrics:

Repeating rhythms, Tracing traditions
Stealing scales and cutting chords and making history of prehistoric patterns, coming back up and out of our shells,
from our hearts, whose every beat is a prayer
There's something I love, I swear something's there.
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer
a pattern, a prayer

And my love affair with megancarnes' work continues! I've always wanted to collab with her on something, but I'm afraid adding my vocals wouldn't do her work justice. When I first played this song though, I started singing along with it, so I decided to record some vocals on the middle portion. :)

gwen's loop of lala's and breathing is the most amazing record ive heard on this website. i'll definitely be making more things out of this.

the title is my nod to the wonderful sparklehorse. "it's a sad and beautiful life" r.i.p

we can be star-ways upside down-ways any way you like

we see moons n suns where others see the city lights

i know you like the fear, ive seen your eyes light up

when theres a human sacrifice

i know you like to panic and ring the alarms

but we are superloving creatures and we mean you no harm

you're never alone you know

it's a wonderful life

I wanted to add something...anything...to this collaboration. I tried all day to think of something artful...something beautiful, and I tried not to express it in the same way I always do: through song. But alas, I could only create this sound.

I remember waking up to do laundry; having just finished high school and waiting on the whole college deal, I felt it was necessary to just lounge around and really do nothing all the time. I can remember walking towards the living room (everyone was at work) and seeing a message on the machine. I played it as I was gathering up my laundry. I can't remember every line that my father said, but I do remember this one:

"Jeremy, you need to turn in the television to CNN. What you will see is going to change everything you know. Your world is about to change." It was approximately 8:58 am.

So I saw the first tower burning. I wasn't sure what my father meant, and felt he was being a little dramatic. I went to put the clothes in the washer and came back out to the living room and heard people screaming. And there is where I saw the second plane hit, and the reactions it received. I wasn't sure what I was looking at just yet, but I suddenly got hit with a pain I had never felt; like I lost something I never knew I had: naivety and innocence. My entire world view was really going to change; the world would be completely different in my eyes from here on out, and I wasn't sure why just yet.

My parents were in the Navy (there's a huge naval base here in Pensacola), and left work early to come home and sit my sister and I down (she was still in school, so this had to be around 2:30pm). After watching the towers fall, seeing building 7 fall, watching people screaming and running and jumping to their deaths...my 18 year old brain couldn't process exactly what I was seeing, or what it meant. My parents sat us down and told us who Osama Bin Laden was, what he wanted, what he meant to the US Foreign relations both past and future. They sat us down and told us to always be mindful of our own arrogance; to remind us that compassion and humility in these times was going to be immensely important.

I can't recall exactly where I was when I heard about my grandmother dying. I can't recall exactly where I was when I found out my parents were getting a divorce. I can't remember exactly where I was when I found out my uncle had committed suicide.

But I can remember exactly who and where I was this Tuesday: I was standing in my living room with tears coming down my face, and I couldn't for the life of me understand why.

So I just kind of took an organic approach to this...and really, the version 1.0 had 2 different songs in it. There was the slower, darker one, and the happy jam. So for some reason I took the chill side. Again, I still only used samples from those RECords, just fewer resources this time. I liked this idea of the need for our voices to be heard...there were 2 spoken word submissions about it. So I wanted to play with that idea, because I feel that's a huge reason why alot of us are on this site...because we have a voice that we want to be heard. :)

I can still play around with the other parts, or try something completely different. So let me know what you guys are thinking/feeling.

Changed the name. FINALLY finished with it... might add in the latin text to the choir later, but we'll see. Here's the latin text with the english translation below it.

Ingemisco, tamquam reus:
culpa rubet vultus meus;
supplicanti parce, Deus.

Preces meae non sunt dignae,
sed tu, bonus, fac benigne,
ne perenni cremer igne.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?

quem patronum rogaturus,

cum vix justus sit securus?

Juste judex ultionis,

donum fac remissionis

ante diem rationis.

Confutatis maledictis,

flammis acribus addictis,

voca me cum benedictus

Qui Mariam absolvisti,

et latronem exaudisti,

mihi quoque spem dedisti.

Oro supplex et acclinis,

cor contritum quasi cinis,

gere curam mei finis.

I moan as one who is guilty:
owning my shame with a red face;
suppliant before you, Lord.

My prayers are unworthy,
but, good Lord, have mercy,
and rescue me from eternal fire.

What shall a wretch like me say?

Who shall intercede for me,

when the just ones need mercy?

Righteous judge of vengeance,
grant me the gift of absolution
before the day of retribution.

When the accused are confounded,

and doomed to flames of woe,

call me among the blessed.

You, who absolved Mary,
and listened to the thief,
give me hope also.

I kneel with submissive heart,
my contrition is like ashes,
help me in my final condition.

Because Garageband was open and I rarely use it (as you can tell), I thought I should put it to use. I heard "Uniquely the Same" and I wondered how it would sound if it was slowed down. It gave off this sort of dreamy effect and I decided to play with it using other tracks and whatnot. I hope you like it. It's my first ever remix...of anything really.

I made a rap album entitled "Out the Woodwork" back in 2005 under the alias "John Grant." This track is called "Vagabonds" and I rap on the third verse.

This is a collaboration I did with rapper Verse One from the U.K. He did the beat and the first two verses. We shared in the production duties on this one.

but i'm not sure how, where, when
i was sure i was okay with what he did
but i think i'm angry again

oh father, i beg for you stay
don't fade like everything else i waited to save

the cancer has spread through his lungs
his heart, and soon his brain
as a child i never understood
where all the anger i felt stemmed from

oh father, i beg for you to stay
i know i won't forgive you if you go away
oh father, i beg for you to stay

[// I wanted to come up with another trilogy, but couldn't seem to figure out a good chord progression. Well that all changed with "the werewolf"'s basic beginning chords: I could easily do three different styles (well...different to me, I suppose) and somewhat have a through-line. While the other two aren't as blatant as this one about its werewolf narrative, I tried to make it as ambiguous as possible. How well that turned out, I'm not sure, but I love the shit out of this song. Man, that sounds pretentious, but I don't mean it to be. It was just fun to write and record. //]

there's something beautiful i don't understand
when i watched the bodies decompose

i could not hear your howl; the wind was wrapping around my heart
i wonder now if you would stay knowing i would always be the same
i wonder if it'd grow on you…

the winter's chill has no effect on me now
i know it's only temporary
and when i wake from my hibernation
i'll still smell the blood on my skin

i could not see you dancing under the harvest moon
i wonder now if i would have stayed had i known you'd change
i wonder if you'd grow on me

heaven wouldn't allow
your metamorphosis

[// What if mid-90's the Smashing Pumpkins and early 00's Nada Surf had an illegitimate baby that sort of resembled a sad SmashingPumpkins/Nada Surf impersonation? Well, I found out when I wrote this song.

Seriously, "our own little asia"? What the f does that mean?? That's pretty f'd up, Jer. Srsly. //]

i don't quite understand what's going on
but i'm sure, in time, it'll come to me...
...i don't read enough about current events...
but i'm sure, in time, it'll clear itself up...

we'll spend our time look out for each other
and leave the rest of the world to drown itself
all those times, i bled

and the clouds are beginning to rotate
that always signifies some sort of change
whatever hours we wasted counting raindrops
could have been spent fixing all the holes

and i don't read enough about current events...
but i'm sure, in time, it'll work itself out

we'll count all the bodies
and shake the floor loose, shake the floor loose
watch them all just slide between the cracks
making wet sounds as they fall underneath
it can be our own little asia

[// The title refers to the Nazi party's ideology: for blood and soil. Obviously the song isn't meant to be Nazi propaganda one way or the other; I just have always had a strange fascination with the way a small group of minds held sway over so many, and how it influenced so many facets of our everyday life, both domestically and foreign. This song also marks a big step for me: I swore I'd never have solos in my songs, because I felt like they were so out of place in the things I wrote. Also, I just hated the fact that every time I played an open mic, the guy who did the coolest solo won. That always pissed me off. Cocky prick. Anyway, enjoy! //]

Second track off of 'Spilt Milk'.  Have at it!

lyrics:

Nothing like a good ol' beating

to make a proper fool out of me

I've taken a torch to everything i own

and shamed my family.

I keep a will in my back pocket.

Another one is tucked in my boot.

And if you're lucky enough to see me coming,

don't hesitate before you shoot.

But I'm gonna go to church on sunday.

Make a proper fool out of me.

Lord, let me make it to sunday.

To wash all of my sins clean.

I'm gonna disappear in the evening.

Take flight before the sun bleeds.

And don't ask the sky for no reason,

or shake me down by my trail of rosary beads.

There's nothing you can pray I aint prayed for

nothing you can say I aint heard

no morning I don't wake up shaking

God damn I hate that mocking bird.

But I'm gonna go to church on Sunday

-make a proper fool out of me.

Lord, let me make it to Sunday

to wash all of my sins clean.

New vocals, added piano and backing vox. Lyrics: Your mask fell down today New skin burnt with change Do you think that changes are worthwhile? Featherlight coccoon eyes Caterpillar sunrise With an elephant tusk smile Your mask fell down today Torn by things that I couldn't say Do you think that you'll never change? Do you? Do you now? Slide back and breathe slow Soon your sense of loss will go Was it just your pride that you kept?

Figured I have only really been contributing parts of songs instead of full things, so here is a song I did a while ago. Super simple guitar riffs with some quick midi drums whipped up on top of it... but I like it. It's very different than what I have been uploading (I love playing all types of music so expect a wide variety, but much more acoustic, maybe another small piece tonight). Thought if anyone wanted to put vocals to it that would be awesome.

song i RECorded, hmm, october 2006. Don't know why I've never put it up here before. there's tons of shit (songs especially) i should probably just start letting go of, releasing, that is, the RECords.

tonight I put it up because i read a poem phonontek wrote on tumblr. i don't think he's released that on hitRECord yet. well maybe perhaps he might. His poem is called "Here Again."
http://michaeleverett.tumblr.com/post/530146045/here-again

ha! now, in fact, he has Released this here poem as a RECord here. So I've cited it as a Resource, the link's down there.

Anyway, this is one I made called Sick Again. the lyrics go...

SICK AGAIN

sick again
medicine
tired liar
strong and scared
pair us up and dance despair
with lonely cares of might and may
and dream today away away
and say the sinners of their sin
i need some more medicine
i'm sick again
sick again
medicine
sick again

Foray into messing with loops in garageband

So this is very messy and unfinished - Ive got no idea if this works - never made a song using loops before. If you think you can add/remove stuff and improve this please do! I don't really know what I'm doing. I can send separate tracks if you need em!

Also I set out to make something along the lines of Portishead/Joanna Newsom/Massive attack but I think I might be ripping some of them off inadvertently - do let me know if it's TOO like something.

Lyrics:

Molasses thick, sugar slick
These metaphores less than perfect
Your words penetrate me like an arrow
But the sharp end is facing back at you

Volcanic rock, I am built
On shifting layers of silt
Older than the Earth and harder than its core
I'll leave you wanting more...

This music was written in November, 2010. My words were written sometime around then, and I later put them with the music. The drums are the oldest, having been created almost a year before then, bounced from an old demo. Synth parts were added December, 2010. I added my own vocals overthe first part and chorus.

The last part to be added was Aszarkowski's vocals, which were a VO of a poem by Metaphorest. I liked the vocals, and in finding the key, happily discovered that it more-or-less matched my song, so after some snip-snips and time-adjusting, I did my best to fit it into this piece of music, which (in my opinion) worked out pretty well :)

I added a small "intro" - just because.

I felt another "gap" open if anyone wants to add to it. Still work-in-progress.

I hope you like it.

Warm thanks to Aszarkowski's beautiful voice and Metaphorest's beautiful words for filling my pages with color <3

Lyrics:

I am under your pressure.
Wild-eyed and careless,
I've done enough to trouble the peace built between us.
Constantly shifting,
Unannounced and instant,
As plates would below the earth.

I ask for no pardon, I ask for no favor,
Unable to surrender in this evr-constant warfare.
Though the trenches are flooded,
The letters are scattered about,
And one man alone must walk across the bones.

Long gone from home.

Unlock the doors and blow the windows open,
Stop the clocks and leave no truth unspoken
Although when living true you may feel lost
A thousand times, the prize is worth the cost

Let down the walls and drop all the pretences
Dismantle the trapdoors and barbed (wire) fences
Invite the good, the bad, the beauty in
Through once thick skin, now beautifully thin

Long gone from home.

Vocals (mine), sampled vocals (alyssa), acoustic guitar and synths - recorded, arranged and mixed via Ableton Live Lite (v.8), programmed drums via v.6

So, sonic producer has a lot of nifty premade synthetic beats and sounds in general and audacity lets me remix with fading in and out and changing speeds etc over and over and over again. I liked, no, loved Expoobident's Sitting On Lenses and thought I'd mix it up with some sonic producer beats and this is what happened... there's a def oops a couple o' times, but oh well, I was just messin around with time I don't have...as usual.

This is the first song I am putting into the 52 RECords album; I hope it's a good start to what I hope to be a fantastic year of many RECords. That being said, I'll still be putting out RECords that may not fall into this album, but we shall see.

Here goes nothing.

lyrics:

no one knows just where she haunts//we hear her moans even when she's not around//no one knows just how she died//weeds overgrown attempt to hide her withered body//everyone wants her to come home everyone knows she's all alone in the wood//calling out against sins long past she only exists in shadows cast by her heart

Turn the bass up!

Key: Bb min. 80bpm

I was mucking around today and programmed a song in a triphop/dub kinda style. It needs vocals though!

Programmed using FL Studio, using samples and synth generators, but no pre-existing loops.

in mid first sentence i had this flashback of a track i did a year ago called "echelon XIII". while playing it i read on. and guess what - the first paragraph would make an amazing short with this track as a soundtrack. i think the timing here is excellent for the scene you describe.

i am putting "echelon XIII" (now called "Amnesiac") up as a resource for Amnesiac so you can judge for yourself.

Lyrics:
I found myself on my own,
Barefoot beneath the moon,
I tried to clear my head for a minute,
And exorcise someone from within it.

Her voice is like an echo
And my memories are still
Like photographs on low exposure
And I can't recall
Without losing composure,
Just a little bit everytime...

The underlying rhythm guitar seemed to jump out of my Martin D28 when I bought it a few years back. Probably left over spirits from the hills of East Tennessee where it came from. I wrote a lyric but when I was playing it faster yesterday, it doesn't fit all that well. All sounds came out of my Martin D28 and Alvarez 12 string. It's prolly too Deliverance for most of you.

So very long ago

Memories came and went

Fairytales from here and far

Again and again

Under the light of crystal eyes

Say we’ll be together again

And I

Believe them

Extraordinary sentiment

Say what you will I’ll see you again

So far away from yesterday

Oceans filled with sand and stone

The weight sinks you in again and again

Under the pale blue sky

Let go my friends and begin again

And I

Believe them

Extraordinary sentiment

Say what you will

I’ll see you again
