I wanted to upload some photos from here to several different collabs, but thought it might make organizational sense to put them all in an album too.

The Art Center Music School used to be a funeral home, and it's where Houdini's funeral was, apparently. Maybe that detail adds to the spookiness of these photos, but the spookiness really comes from a building in dire need of restoration, and most of the lights off.

Nonetheless, sometimes the place is hopping, with students and teachers coming and going, or at recitals. When I was still in town (prior to '05), and on this visit back in '06 or '07, it was being managed by the 90-something Juanita Hammond, a force to be reckoned with! But also a wonderful woman of faith who was lots of fun to have a conversation with. This building is in Detroit's infamous Cass Corridor.

It's not a degree-granting school; people of all ages simply take vocal and instrumental music lessons there.

This photo was a mistake, but I never deleted it, and now I'm sharing it with you all. :)

It was taken in Art Center Music School, Detroit. I still wasn't very acquainted with my camera, and wasn't doing too well with the low light conditions. My friend was poking around in some storage space and this is the result. FWIW.

This window looks out (theoretically, anyway) into a courtyard enclosed within the center of the building.

At any rate, it's a cheerier photo of the same window I've resourced on this RECord.

Studio space in the Art Center Music School, Detroit. To be honest, I don't know what this space is used for - dance lessons? Choral singing? Who knows. Something that requires space and a piano, and apparently gathers at least as many people as there are chairs there? But I liked the feeling that the space itself is waiting for something to happen...

This is the same space as the photo "Waiting" I've resourced before. My friend was about to play something on the piano, I think! Or maybe just testing the keys to see how badly out of tune they might be.
