Heard the audio at the very end of Channing's 'Stupid (no music)' RECord and thought of Dan. And, thus, an album was borne.

I've been experimenting with lights and my camera recently - and here's what I've managed to do so far. There are a few other pictures of that kind, that could be used as textures or perhaps someone can animate them. I couldn't decide whether to upload them as individual RECords (and then gather them in one album) or put them together in a zip file, but eventually chose the first option (just thought it's easier when you can see right away what's there). So please, revise it, refine it, use it however you like:)

With references to nusha's butterfly video, and rjdpa's butterfly pictures, I remembered these that I took a few years ago in Maine during the Monarch Butterfly migration. There were hundreds of them, it was so exciting and beautiful.

Q. What is the de sidere fruit?

A. The de sidere fruit is a very special type of fruit that grows only under waterfalls. It cannot be bought or sold, cultured or harvested. Lovers give each other this fruit in the autumn to show their devotion. The skin of it is peeled away and the heart eaten, piece by piece, down through the thorny core of it. If the fruit is eaten by an untrue lover, the core will pierce its way out, through the stomach and the skin, until none of it remains in the body.

The fruit is a deep red, like blood. It is at once romantic and horrifying, as an obsessive lover.

Q. What does the de sidere fruit taste like?

A. It is sweet. It is tart. It consumes your stomach and coats your thoughts. It is the best thing you have ever eaten, but once it has left your tongue you will never again remember how it tasted.

Q. When was the fruit discovered?

A. It was discovered long before you were born.

Q. Where did the fruit come from?

A. It came from the stars.

Q. How long has the fruit been used?

A. The fruit can never be used. It may be borrowed or won, but it is not a thing to possess – only to hold.

Q. How long has the fruit been in use?

A. It has been in use since the sky first kissed the supernal lights, since the moon first chose to cast its shadow in the afterglow of the sun. It will be in use until the end of the earth spills over into the heavens, until the deepest song of the universe draws to its final note.

Q. When is the best time to pick the fruit?

A. The best time to pick the fruit is when the sunlight catches the water in the same manner that a rainbow is birthed.

Q. Is the fruit healthy to eat?

A. Some have been cured of lifelong illnesses by the property of the fruit. Others have wasted away from a single bite.

Q. How old must you be to partake of the fruit?

A. Older than you are now.

Q. What happened when the first fruit was eaten?

A. When the first fruit was eaten, the earth divided into seasons of frost and fever, and the first child was conceived.

Q. What happened when the second fruit was eaten?

A. No one knows what happened when the second fruit was eaten.

Q. Does the fruit exist?

A. The fruit exists.

Q. What does the fruit want?

A. The fruit wants the seasons to return to their glory, and the birds to re-learn how to fly. It wants the clouds to find slumber in the morning, and rainbows to find their roots in the earth.

Q. What makes the fruit so beautiful?

A. The fruit is beautiful because the people believe it is beautiful. If it were ugly, none would have seen it but the visionaries who search out the beauty in storm clouds.

Thought someone might like this and be able to use it :)

Basically I was driving in a bad thunderstorm and was trying to get the insane lightning on my camera as I drove back home. My friends and I had been filming a horror film and I figured the shot could come in handy. But obviously I was DRIVING, right, so I couldn't just aim it at the sky...

So instead I turned on my camera and placed it face up on my dashboard and crossed my fingers that it'd catch the lightning.

It didn't. Instead, it captured all of the street lights passing by :D It looks all fuzzy and pretty because of the rain. I cut the video that I captured so that way there aren't a bunch of pauses between lights and such. Also I took out the audio because it was just me singing very badly to The Killers. ;)

I know it's kinda late, but I made this for my Valentine on Valentines Day. It's an anatomical watercolor painting of, obviously, the heart. I labeled its parts using pieces of white paper and ink, and further tattooed its innards with memorable moments, places, dates, as well as future plans. And finally, I framed it. <3

it began with a color,

                green then orange,

a stirring sound, a growing feeling,

a spark of wonder, fear and hope, desire and faith, whirling and twirling amidst the mind

a shriek, a pop, a coo, a wail, a sigh

a sudden blur, a still calm, a swirlin bled

                                       a whiz of expressions

then the realization,

the confusion, the loss, the explanation....

... it was all a dream

Dan
And from that day on he lived with the stars. There he shined bright, there he guided many a weary traveler home, and there he rested in peace for an eternity.

RIP Dan.

This is an execution of an idea that came to me the other day -

On tumblr I saw a picture of an open book and someone had written a large message over the text. At first I didn't know if I was supposed to read the words all on the left page and then continue to the right page (as you read a book) or if I was supposed to read it as a larger message just top to bottom (as you read a letter.) I started one way then realized it didn't make sense and figured out the other way was the correct one - but then I had this challenge in my head, if a message could be written so that it made sense no matter which way you chose to read it.

This is that challenge. I would have liked to be able to write something with a duality, where if you read it one way it means something and reading it the other way means the exact opposite... but I was having a tough time as it was, being as I'm not a writer so I thought I'd post this in hopes someone can more successfully execute this concept <3

Wanting to get some sense of the actual spaces I was usually flying over, I did a fair amount of travel by train in the past year.  This picture (taken somewhere between Montana and Wisconsin) makes me think of time, those telephone poles tick-tick-ticking from somewhere to somewhere else.  I'm in love with the train. Ca-clack-ca-clack. Ca-clack-ca-clack.

Time_by_al3xbc-d36veaf

"Time is jealous of you, and wars against your lilies and your roses. You will become sallow, and hollow-cheeked, and dull-eyed. You will suffer horribly. . . Ah! realize your youth while you have it. Don't squander the gold of your days, listening to the tedious, trying to improve the hopeless failure, or giving away your life to the ignorant, the common, and the vulgar. These are sickly aims, the false ideals of our age. Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing."

"The common hill-flowers wither, but they blossom again. The laburnum will be as yellow next June as it is now. In a month there will be purple stars on the clematis, and year after year the green night of its leaves will hold its purple stars. But we never get back our youth. The pulse of joy that beats in us at twenty becomes sluggish. Our limbs fail, our senses rot. We degenerate into hideous puppets, haunted by the memory of the passions of which we were too much afraid, and the exquisite temptations that we had not the courage to yield to. Youth! Youth! There is absolutely nothing in the world but youth!"

I really like this effect, you slow your shutter speed down and then take the picture and focus in and out.  You then get the shadows of whatever you are shooting.

I had to put my latest fireworks footage to use, especially since these shows tend to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Therefore I consider this my biggest budget RECord to date.

Does anyone else think towns and cities should reconsider future fireworks shows and plug that money back into, say, education? Just sayin'. :)

Manifesto
We need to classify what we are.

When asked what music we like, we say “Anything that sounds good”. When asked what movie to watch, we have recommendations ready, when they were released, who’s in them, and how they were received. We know what’s on without glancing at the TV. We know the cake is a lie and the princess is in another castle. We are CULTURE JUNKIES.

We raise culture to the heights of the noble pursuits. If academia claims that which constitutes the world around us merits study and mastery, we add culture to the syllabus. We know what there is to know about pop culture, and if we don’t, we want to, and we’re getting there.

We define as culture any product of any media, be it mass, mainstream, minute, or meager; any consequence of creativity, no matter how shallow or profound; any text bearing an author, origin, birthplace, or source, be it abstract or concrete; anything made, crafted, designed, written, drawn, or constructed.

We define as culture junkies those turning on and tuning in; those watching the airwaves; those reveling in a brave new world of cultural overload. We are not movie geeks. We are not TV addicts. We are not music freaks. We are not bookworms. We are all of the above and all that follow. We quote, we reference, we cite, we allude, we nod knowingly. Our holy texts are Rolling Stone, IGN, TV Guide, IMDb, Wikipedia, and the New York Times.

We are not scholars or theorists. We can be, but we need not be. We have no use for dense symbolism or cluttered semiotics. We don’t care what Demme is trying to say with Silence of the Lambs. Explaining Hitchcock’s misogyny or Seinfeld’s existentialism will impress few. We value the texts as simply texts, and we absorb every word; reading between the lines is not our game.

We claim nothing as sacred or universally accepted. We know there will always be those who hate the Beatles, The Godfather, The Simpsons, Hemingway, Picasso, Nirvana, and Singin’ in the Rain. We may scoff, we may question, but we respect the opinion, because you’ll respect ours. Some of us may not like Duchamp’s “Fountain,” but we like that others like it; we like that it’s there. Even “bad culture” adds to the wellspring.

We claim that culture is culture is culture; it is a never-ending process of revisiting, reworking, remixing, revising, remaking, and reconfiguring. Overhaul, twist, tweak, rattle, destroy and rise anew from the ashes. “Good artists copy; great artists steal.” We will fold culture back on itself and create something un/original. We’ll mash the Beatles with Jay-Z, Close Encounters with Deliverance, and Lost with Lolcats. There is nothing too sacrosanct to be excused from the cultural cannibalism. We de- and re-value the invaluable. “Forbidden fruits make sweet jams”; pardon us while we steal that rhetoric. All culture is source material for more culture. One plus one equals one.

We have no endgame in mind. We have no group aspiration because we have no group. We have no collective strategy, no devised approach, no plan of attack. Where culture goes next, where it takes us is not our decision to make.

We’re just in it for the ride.

"MIDWAY upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straight path was lost..."

Talk about rich source material.

The Inferno? Sprawling. As epic as epic gets. Dour, yes, but pull the journey from the shadows and bring that wierdly wonderful trip into worlds more familiar and you've got a hell of a story.

Music? Easy peezy. The Inferno has a clear chapter structure, each devoted to a common theme. Think wisps of high piano notes tinkling in Limbo; Spanish guitars plucking away in the Second Circle - The Lustful; languid cello reverberating through the Fifth Circle - The Slothful; hard percussion beating away in the Seventh Circle - The Violent. If each circle has a theme, each circle has a soundtrack, a mood, a motif.

The story? Limitless. Make it two con men on the lam in the Nevada desert. A young lover chasing his girl through the 1940s Parisian metropolis. A novelist fighting writer's block on a riverboat up the Amazon. An artist of espionage plunging deeper and deeper into a spy game on the Trans-Siberian railway. The story skeleton is a versatile one; the devil's in the details.

The visuals? Glorious and trippy. Neon graveyards harboring lost souls in Limbo; Escher-esque brothels dotting the Lustful circle; drowsy bathers floating down the River Styx in inner tubes. There's fun to be had in the worlds to be drawn.
