Oh man this took me two days to get into the right dimensions!! I spent about a week editing this, and I'm still not happy with it, but by jove I've had it! I hope it atleast can provide a framework for other people to edit to, if nothing else.

Ooh I meant to say- there's a few bits of public domain film in this too, from archive.org. Mostly the black and white animation bits, the exploding buildings at the end and the woman on fire.

:)

Nels Cline -- I mostly know him as Wilco's guitarist, although he's made all kinds of music in all kinds of contexts. Let's start layering visuals -- http://www.hitrecord.org/records/81888

Here's some (lo-fi) video of the occasion.

I think it makes a decent jumping off point for what we can begin to do visually. Plus Ryan Patrick's excellent video from yesterday where he set the song to public domain footage involving fire and smoke.

some experimental falling animation..
so i decided for this collab i will just animate bits of things rather than a coherent timeline of things.. so that any of you can use them as you wish..

ive gone a little kaleidoscope crazy lately.. :/ i know it seems lazy but i really thought the visuals fit the song kind of.. hypnotic.
it's just part of the song cause this is just an experiment with Ryan's collage of stock footage. i like the way this effect makes them all look like ferocious machines working fastly and hypnotically and hypnotically and hypnotically

pretty hypnotic huh? i have a bit of a hypnofetish.
excuse me if i dont reference all the resources:/ i made this a few weeks ago so it doesnt include any of the new ones yet. just showing an example here.. i will upload a bigger one when im back in london. cyprus internet is still a little villagey.

alsooo the reason i mirrored it is so that i can use the left side of each drawing and the right side..and make 2 sets of each! the more the merrier with this process..since 50drawings only gave me 10 seconds of animation :/

i consider this video unfinished, even tho it runs the entire length of nel's version. unfortunately, i have neither the skill set nor the appropriate program, apparently, to get it to do what i want. very frustrating!!!

so i'm hoping someone here will like it enough to play further and fine-tune! i definitely would've overlapped some clips, to make it more cohesive, and would LOVE to have some of the negative space cut in with joe's film....alas.

big thanks to everyone whose clips i've used, and for the public domain clips i found following suggestions i got here!

SUPER big thanks to wirrow for offering such an innately psychedelic audio treat!

and if anyone has suggestions, tips, or tutorial URLs for the kind of tricks i mentioned above, or can point me to software that won't cost x-months' salary, i'm really keen to learn more! <3

Some color progression shots of nighttime snowfall rounded out by a little bit of playing with matches. I love the Metaphorest/Lawrie Brewster collab that birthed this accapella version of "Shadow Wonder" so I set the images to it....

Hope this is useful for Re-RECoring in the future, at least bits and pieces of it

When I first started working on this REmix I searched "fire" in the public domain archives and got a bunch of Cold War era propaganda films that seemed to use fear to get everyone all fired up. My mom actually remembered having to watch these films in school as a kid. Anyways, I thought I'd mix the two different ends of the spectrum--fire as a creative force/thing of beauty and fire as a tool of fear.
Then I tried to mix layers upon layers upon layers in rapid repetition to cut to the beat and to keep up with the pace of the music as it gets faster. I also added in a sound effect at the beginning of a match being lit. This was definitely a crazy, fun challenge and different from the editing I normally do!
I'm still compiling the list of all my resources that i used, and I'll add that to this RECord.
The public domain videos were:
"Duck and Cover" (this one's a classic!)
"Vision in the Forest"
"The House in the Middle"
"A Day Called X" (footage of a test evacuation of Portland during the Cold War)
"Make Mine Freedom" (weird cartoon)
"Mighty Mouse: Wolf! Wolf!" (another cartoon)

Thanks for watching!

i know this is not very 'instructiony' as a piece but i was suddenly inspired by joe's idea of making an abstract record about the collaborative process of hitrecord.
let me know if i've left out any resources
