When we dream about an experience our minds tend to present our memories back to us in some sort of fragmented state. Instead of REplaying the experience back to us, often times we get glimpses of moments, of people, and often our auditory senses distort the playback in our head.

So this is how a dream about hitRECord at Sundance 2010 might look, and feel, in the unconscious state.

An abstract remix of Channing Tatum's "Half a Clown."

Much thanks to all of you that contributed some exemplary readings of "Parallels" earlier today!

Text:

Caught between the parallels

This great illusion shining

Like the end of a long winter

Time is this shallow dream

Held together with string

And as the shadows glimmer

The calm returns like magic

To stay until dark

I think Joe said it best when he said "The meaning comes after."

There's a lot going on in this RECord that I can't truly explain. When I edit, I'm really just piecing together what *feels* right. This felt right to me.

Feeling doesn't always transition into understanding. And that's the power of creation. And art itself.

Lukus' "Accents" put me in a particular state of mind and I went exploring through the site to find visuals that emoted the audio. GimikJo has an excellent compilation album from earlier today and that was a big help. Also searching by "tags" is always a great way to find pieces to the puzzle. And some RECords, like "A Boy's Dream," are sitting in the back of my mind (and saved on my computer) just waiting for the right project.

So, here's "Dream Ascension." I'd love to hear what everyone's interpretations are.

I wanted to try and structure some kind of surreal narrative around some of the performance-based RECords of Edward Shallow. After playing around with a few ideas, I came up with this.

Set to the somber sounds of gbwhale's "I Walk Alone," this RECord is my interpretation of a man (with hat) who goes to sleep and has the inability to fully realize his dreams due to circumstances of his past.

The visuals in his dreams are fragmented and unclear. The purest images he sees are those of cold ice, and his lonely feet walking through snow. The things that matter, or mattered, to him are fading into unrecognizable memories.

Remember what it was like the first time you got to leave the neighborhood alone... on a bike?

Last year I interviewed my two friends Billy and Dan Chandler (they're twins.) They did candid discussions about similar dreams and feelings they had about the way the unexplored sections of their neighborhood appeared to them.

Both brothers seemed uncertain if certain aspects of their recollections were memories, dreams, or nightmares...

Perspective is one of our greatest attributes as human beings. It is far more important than we may even realize.

chriswonders' "Final Breaths of a Main Character" is the type of refreshing perspective on the world, and its possibilities both in reality and in imaginary form, that I love to discover here on the site.

It is a spectacularly shot video about a character who creates a fantasy world with a pencil, a piece of paper, and his imagination. And what unfolds is beyond fascinating. The visuals capture a sense of adventure, danger, and pure childhood fantasy.

I fused that together with the instrumental section of Afroskeleton's "Used To" and book-ended the piece with two spoken snippets of kellibean's "If."

Sleep Mentation is the thoughts, feelings, images, perceptions, hallucinations, and active dreams taking place during sleep. I thought that a variation on that term would make for a good title to this RECord.

Essentially an interpretation of a daydream, I found it interesting to link these two separate resources together to make a new story that has very little context, but spectacular visuals. I wanted to make a cinematic dream sequence out of them and it was a fun editing experiment.

Note: I really encourage anyone viewing this to throw on a pair of headphones in order to fully experience the musical magic of tonguecutsparrow's "Angels With Quarters On Their Eyes."

I found the end of tlee's "Dreams x inception" particularly interesting, for he says "Hopefully tonight I can make my way back again." The tone of his voice is fascinating as he discusses returning to the dream, and I think he conveys that thought in a way that made for a great audio sample.

Don't we all have that dream every now and then that we'd do almost anything to return to?

With this RECord, however, I wanted to find a visual that wasn't that of a cheerful dream. More of a destructive one.

I guess that's one of the key components to the art of the REmix. We're able to get from tlee's recollection about his dream girl to him suddenly wanting to return to a dream about breaking stuff. The possibilities are always so endless here...

Welcome back to '80s cinema.

via's retro sci-fi instrumental "falling (asleep)" reminded me of soundtrack scores from movies like "*batteries not included."

And when I found JKVisFX's "Boy on a Flying Bed" I had a feeling the two RECords would go together once I started to REmix them so that they would combine forces to tell a story.

The real magic, for me, in "Boy on a Flying Bed" is its look. The film stock appears to be about three decades old and the RECord has the look and feel of something that would have the tagline "Steven Spielberg presents."

I really enjoyed working with these resources and I hope I captured the spirit of my birth year: 1981.

I wanted to REmix Joe's 11/11 raw Regularity footage into an abstract dream sequence that focuses on some of the themes of that day: time, space, moments.

It's intentionally cut down to come off as abstract, and that's what I think is intriguing about the whole idea of the Regularity itself. What does it mean? When did it truly begin? And there's a million other questions to go with those two.

I'm particularly pleased with how the T.S. Elliot poetry reading came out on this. It could almost be a separate RECord; a ten second RECord or something.

I did a lot of trimming on jonthewallflower's "The Ukulele's Lullaby" to get it to accompany the reading the way it appears here and I just like the union so much. The speed of the instrument shifts to the tones of the speech, leaving slight pauses here and there. What fantastic REsources!

Anyway, I've rambled a bit too much...

Lots of REmixing and REpetition in this track.

I sampled OldTapeGhost's "Beyond the Zero" instrumental and did some changes to the beat. Then I heavily REmixed la.jeune.vieillesse's "Roving Away" reading with several REoccurring themes:

"Life is but a dream"
"The Earth goes round"
"Listen to the sounds"
"Plant your feet on the ground"
"From cities to towns, they drown out the stars"

See if you can catch some of the references to the movie and its characters.

Lyrics are in a separate RECord and REsourced below.

* Reflection in bedside mirror

It weighs exactly .64 ounces... Actually I made that up. I have no idea how much it weighs.
