i love remixing image records, so here's an album full of the ones i've done so far. <3
my most ambitious REmix to date, to illustrate the breakup scene from A Mathematician's Approach to Love (http://hitrecord.org/records/185877 if the link doesn't work)... my goal was to make a realistic 3D composite image using 30+ image REsources. did i succeed?
for background info, please check out the story! (link above and in resources)
some of the stock photos i used were self-taken; if you can't find them in the REsources and would like me to upload them for further REmixes (i.e. the desk, the light, the math books), please let me know.
many thanks to all of the incredible artists/photographers whose work i used!
& if you are curious about the process, or where certain REsources appear in the image (it's hard to find some of them), feel free to ask away! : D
dear hitRECord,
i wish you all a very happy, safe, and healthy new year. may twenty ELEVEN bring you nothing but genuine smiles and happiness. <3
thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this community. i'm proud to say it has made me a significantly happier and more confident person. it is magical. WE are magical. i cannot say thank you enough, but here goes: THANK YOU, again, by heart.
xo, dusty.
p.s. apologies to the city of chicago for butchering your skyline...
People are put into the ground when they die.
Seeds are put into the ground to be born again.
^ the tiny story I wrote earlier
I had this idea that when the heart stops beating, it is planted into the ground like a seed to bring forth more life even after death. Let's keep our loved ones alive, again by heart -- RECord, RECord, RECord. <3
for all the nebulovers <3
my valentine's day contribution. also posted to tumblr here: http://tumblr.com/xty1h10lv8
featuring the following PD images from NASA:
the tarantula nebula (my personal favorite nebula): http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap040202.html
the heart and soul nebulas (thought they'd be appropriate): http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap080914.html
atoms-for-peace galaxy collision (because galaxies would collide if i loved you all any more): http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap101116.html
a noonday in the sun, made entirely out of paper and fabric i scanned (and a pd light image). look out for the longray, midlight, and gloam versions, coming soon to a RECord near you (may take a few days since i need to alter the sun/sky accordingly...)! after i finish, i will upload the .PSD files so that someone can animate them into a little film. any takers? : )
based off of the subtractive color TV logo from earlier. i redid the entire image to be more accurate and higher quality. it took me two hours to get everything in precise order, but i'm happy with the result. this has a transparent background so even though according to subtractive color laws the background should be white, feel free to put this on navy blue or paisley green.
can we slap this on some tees, please please please?
for my digital arts class - featuring photos i took, graphs of various functions on one xy-plane (two cubics, a heart, and 1/x) and public domain images from NASA and Grey's Anatomy (the reference book, not the show).
please give me feedback and criticism! tell me how this image makes you feel, so that i know if i achieved my goals in this project.
again and always by <3
yay trash deco font! thought of this little saying last week, and had to put it on a poster. the way i see it, people who hit PLAY like to watch life go by without taking part, people who hit PAUSE are hesitant to move forward, people who hit STOP are giving up, and people who hit RECord are actively pursuing the future. go us! <3
i'm sure you've all encountered this little guy during your hitRECord experience. here's to a lesser known but extremely lovable and indispensable member of the hR team: the RE-REX! he may have teeny tiny t-rex arms but that doesn't mean he won't give you all the love in the world! all he wants is a hug and a smile in return <3
This took me nearly 5 hours to perfect, but this image contains exactly 1000 origami cranes (25 rows x 40 columns - 1 + the big one).
An ancient Japanese legend says that if you fold 1000 cranes and make a wish, it will come true.
So I wish you all the happiness in the world. <3
(The image is 1280 x 800, so please set it as your desktop wallpapers!)
the hitRECord version - still for japan (with homage to the japanese flag & ancient legend), but with a big REC button instead. <3

here is a portrait of me from Japan's Edo Period :D as you can see, I'm so hipster that I wore this RECord store shit before you guys were even born.
... okay I lied, this is actually my sad attempt to replicate Japanese printmaker Katsushika Hokusai's portrait style (seen here) digitally. done for my Digital Arts class.
In the nuclear future, we will evolve into cockroaches.
With Kafka as our prophet, we will scuttle through the endless rubble, and wish we had instead grown wings.

thought it'd make a cool album cover/wallpaper/etc, so here's the textless version! download it for SUPER high quality. fixed up some tiny errors in this version, too. enjoy <3
hevn wailed, heart torn in two
“can you not understand?
i only want us to be one
forever hand in hand.”

i'm obsessed with minimalist movie posters and had to make one for our current project. <3
for some reason, when i saw the original image, i thought the ripples/reflections in the water resembled planet earth... so of course, i had to make this. i'm not exactly sure what message this picture is trying to convey. "what if god were a duck?"
(additional resources used are public domain images from NASA's APOD.)
pretty pleased with how this turned out. this is a slightly edited and higher quality version of what i posted on tumblr. <3
an album cover for Burn On (Stereophonic) and a tribute to Dan <3 uploaded at 11:12 AM because I am kind of a ditz... :( featuring the teeny tiny silhouettes of Joe and Jared looking up at the sky on a starry night to see fiery flames reminiscent of Dan.
(Additional REsource: APOD)
found a little girl** standing in front of a hitRECord at the movies promo poster in London! looks like she really wants to go : D...
** she is definitely not photoshopped okay
if anyone wants the actual poster sans brick wall and girl, let me know and i'll upload it-- i mean, look around london to find the original distributor, uhhh...

also used a public domain map by EULER !!!! !!!! !!!! (i find euler very exciting, okay.) sadly, however, i am now filled with a DEEP HATRED for this map, because i have lost sleep over this remix and i hate how it turned out and it looked so much better in my head and ALSO I AM BREAKING UP WITH HELVETICA... for the day... or the week maybe... we had a very upsetting time tonight. >:0

NOTE: GIF GLITCHES UNLESS YOU VIEW THE ACTUAL RECORD-- click & view please!
happy vinyl RECords day !!! the golden spiral that appears over the image at the end is a public domain one -- HOWEVER !!! i did not use it or any outside help to make MY golden spiral or rectangle, i measured everything by hand with the help of a good ol' calculator. it took like 10 hours to put everything into place, but was so worth it.
PHI (1.6180339...) appears in this RECord as follows:
- Ratio of Height to Width is approx the Golden Ratio.
- The "Golden Rectangle" underneath the RECords was made using the Golden Ratio.
- The Golden Spiral was constructed from that rectangle.
And please note that the actual spiral (blue curve at the end) passes through all of the centers of the RECords because I HAD TO MAKE THIS PERFECT !!!!!
I added in that public domain spiral at the end so you could see how this turned out... pretty accurate, huh :'D I should probably be ashamed of myself for being so obsessed with math. It is truly embarrassing how many times I have hand-measured the golden rectangle/spiral for hitRECord now...
Also sorry for all the exclaimation points I get really really really excited when I talk about math :'0
gentlemen: meet your new life goal! grow yourself one of these and women and men will throw themselves at you! might i suggest you have a golden mustache at the FALL FORMAL?!!?!!
** NOTE: if you use this mustache in a REmix, MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE PROPORTIONS!!! otherwise you will have a NOT VERY GOLDEN MUSTACHE! for shame!!
the golden spiral used in this image is public domain. for more information about the golden spiral and its mathematical/universal significance, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_spiral
i realize the actual REC room looks nothing like this, but this is a room and it has lots of RECords, including merch/show ads (fall formal! RECollection! tiny book! not-so-tiny hat! button!)....
i've included all REsources except the REsources of the two posters and thimbles' tie, because that would be a bit excessive... anyway, tis an honor to be able to use so many awesome image RECords from you guys! <3
and another one bites the dust...
i think it'd be cool if we made a video using this series of images by anapaulavm, maybe with one stark, high-contrast (like these images) video clip of a hand throwing crumpled paper into the trash. just to show the frustrating process of writing love letter after love letter... maybe it could start with this animation and then keep multiplying in a sort of "brady bunch" grid style... 1x1 2x2 3x3 5x5 8x8 13x13 etc... with the trash clip interspersed in there? does that make sense...
here's a rough outline:
1. this animation 1x1
2. clip of paper --> trash can
3. this animation 2x2
4. paper --> trash can
5. this animation 3x3
6. paper --> trash can
7. ....
etc with some other video clips here and there to make it more interesting :p and music of course, gotta have music... i think this could make a cute and relatable little short. <3 and no, you don't HAVE to use the fibonacci series as the dimensions... actually BETTER YET make it 1x1 1x2 2x3 3x5 5x8 8x13 13x21 etc.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!! until it turns into a golden rectangle.... omg!!!!!!
no, too much? really? oh... okay. :(
it means a LOT to me that so many people contributed their lovely RECords from the fall formal; i regret not being able to attend but i can live vicariously through these gorgeous RECords! instead of RE-RECing my favorite photos, i thought i'd REmix them together :o) consider this my humble apology for not being able to come out to LA and support this wonderful community. <3 <3 <3 thank you all for everything.
so i was playing around with saintmaker's amazing photo & somehow a scary red wolflike demon with a conveniently wide open mouth emerged subtley from the background... surely a sign from the photoshop gods that i'd gotten a chance to redeem myself for that last LRRH REmix i did. hope this serves as an interesting poster for our little red collab! <3
o<:D merry christmas, niki! <3 <3 thanks ever-so-much for being a sweetheart, and constantly giving hearts and hugs and re-recs. have a happy holiday season, i hope 2012 brings you many smiles! <-- these are all things i wanted to say on the postcard, but couldn't because of my terrible hand-writing.
again, i have all of these in HQ so all you have to do is ask. they looked a lot better in my head. i originally wanted to a version where the 'S' created by joe's body was the S in Strawberry Bootlaces, and the 't' was created by the bootlaces in his hands, which became the other letters too but... my skills are somewhat lacking...
the middle one has the title in Sibylline's lovely writing but it's very small in this preview.
16x9 on a transparent background. :o) anyone wanna do the "you are seeking little other than"?
(NOTE: this version actually has a teeny tiny error (semi transparency in a tiny patch after the second s in screens) -- probably not an issue but i'm a perfectionist (currently kicking myself for this gargantuan oversight!) so i will put up a fixed version if needed! just ask : D)
dan's fiery spiral lined up so well with the text that i couldn't help but cry. i do so love my spirals, and i find the original photo inspiring. i was trying to remove the splotches of pink and green around the spiral but then i realized they had to stay. great job, everyone <3
before i explain myself, i need to point out that i haven't done anything unforgivably nerdy on here for a while! okay?! so naturally, when i saw this photo and thought, "hey i wonder where all the lines will intersect!" (reasonable), and decided to find out for myself, i ended up making this. and to my surprise and subsequent delight, the lines met at three points!! design and architecture experts are probably like "duh" but come on!! let the little math nerd have her sad little party of one okay???
my secret valentine is miss Rochelle Boucher, who has always been very sweet and supportive on here, and when she re-recs me I feel like I'M flying! so here's a little inspiration for you miss; hope you SOAR through your last semester of college <3 it was a pleasure reading through your lovely RECords and stumbling upon this inspiring little tiny story. hope you like the REmix! happy valentine's day! xxxxx <3
wishing my LENA-love (_buttercup) a happy happy birthday. lena you are Lovely, Enchanting, iNspiring, and Amazing. thank you for being YOU. i didn't know how best to show you how much you inspire me, but if this inspires you, it's coz you made it yourself! these are your words, not mine, so make sure to remember them ALWAYS. <3
Florence the inventor is a mad genius who invents himself into something of a god... how long will it be till our world is taken over by a Florence? (Perhaps Florence is the father of a generation of robots who eventually rule the world and destroy humankind. ... I once wrote a term paper about a world dominated by artificial intelligence, a state i called "self-sufficient robotic equilibrium"... I can upload it if anyone is interested. It's very nerdy and terribly mathematical.)
alternate title: Florence and the Machines. (ba dum chhh)
i made this for niko and inky. it's not much, but i couldn't stop crying and wanted to channel my grief into something uplifting; i barely made this, it sort of just made itself, but. i wanted to make you both a sunrise, out of niko's candle flame. never before have my heart and art overlapped as much as they are with this. as it fell into place, my tears dried, and a profound feeling of thanks rose in their place. RIP niko, and THANK YOU both for shining on me. <3
based on this quote that never fails to help me keep going:
“Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.” - Rabindranath Tagore
As you may know, I'm obsessed with fractals and chaos theory. The Lorenz Effect, which this comic is based on, is incredibly humbling, terrifying, and profound. The idea is this: many aspects of life, such as the weather, have a high sensitivity to initial conditions, i.e. even delaying your actions by one millisecond can cause a wildly different result. The saying "when a butterfly flaps its wings, it can cause a hurricane somewhere else" is very much exaggerated and unlikely catchphrase to characterize the effect... but here's the main point: YOU CAN NEVER KNOW HOW THE FUTURE WILL PAN OUT. You can NEVER know what each tiny little thing you do today will spiral into tomorrow. Life is unpredictable in that way. The Lorenz Effect is one of my favorite things in all of mathematics, and I think in its own deeper-meaning, bigger-picture, humbling kind of way, it has a lot to do with LOOPS.
For more information about the Lorenz Effect, check this out: http://www.stsci.edu/~lbradley/seminar/butterfly.html
I never once thought, driving through my quaint neighboring town of Newtown, CT, that anything bad could happen there. It's one of those perfect little New England communities, where everyone is friendly and kind. I've been really struggling to come to terms with the fact that such an immense tragedy could happen so close to the place I've called home for over a decade... but today, I'm trying to look on the bright side. Little children, before Christmas, are so full of joy and anticipation and childish wonder... they would want us to look on the bright side. I first drew this parallel when Dan died, but I hope it can be of comfort even now. <3

Merry Christmas, jestferlaffs! I'm SO very sorry for taking so long to post your gift, I finally finished my semester and was able to devote some time to remixing your lovely photography. This triptych has a few themes that I noticed you liked when I looked through your photos: nature, sunflowers, patterns, and Canada... and a few things I like: fractals, spirals, and circles. I hope you like it, and more importantly, I hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!! :o)
Note: Please download to view in high quality! If you or anyone else would like each remix uploaded individually, please let me know!

"The enchanting charms of this sublime science reveal themselves in all their beauty only to those who have the courage to go deeply into it. But when a person of that sex, that, because of our mores and our prejudices, has to encounter infinitely more obstacles and difficulties than men in familiarizing herself with these thorny research problems, nevertheless succeeds in surmounting these obstacles and penetrating their most obscure parts, she must without doubt have the noblest courage, quite extraordinary talents and superior genius." -- Carl Friedrich Gauss, 1807
This is a quote that will always motivate me, and I hope will motivate other women in mathematics as well. Thank you, Inger, for creating this lovely illustration and reminding me why I'm here. <3
